Job Description

The Office of the Provost is led by the University’s chief academic officer who is responsible for the stewardship of this mission. The Provost leads the academic core of the University, serving as the principal representative of the academy to both internal and external constituencies, and leading strategic academic initiatives on behalf of the University. Working with a leadership team including associate provosts, the vice president for research, the associate vice president for undergraduate enrollment, the deans, the University librarian, and other academic leaders, he seeks to cultivate a learning community that challenges and engages students, inspires leading research and scholarship, and appreciates all intellectual inquiry as a pursuit of truth.

The Associate Vice President for Academic Finance and Administration [AVPAFA] is a member of the Provost’s core team and is a direct report. He or she will provide strategic leadership for academic budgeting, finance, and planning. The AVPAFA serves as the Provost’s primary advisor on the financial plan for Notre Dame’s academic core. He or she will manage a team of professionals to facilitate the annual development of the academic budget, multi-year financial planning and analysis, and oversight of faculty payroll. The AVPAFA provides oversight for the financial performance of the Provost’s Office, making recommendations for strategic investments, forecasting, enhancing efficiencies, and maintaining budgetary discipline. This leader serves as the Provost’s principal liaison to the Finance Division (including Office of Budget and Planning and the Office of the Controller). The AVPAFA also works closely with deans, senior academic leaders, and the budget/business offices of the colleges, schools, and extra-collegiate academic units and acts as an ambassador for the academic core to various finance units of the University.

Develop strategy for the most creative, effective, and cost-effective use of the academic budget.
Facilitate the annual development of the academic budget; participate in Budget Working Group meetings and Board of Trustees Stewardship Committee meeting.
Provide oversight and maintenance of financial commitments and resource allocations (both one-time and annual) made by the Provost.
Facilitate the annual faculty merit raise program.
Oversee faculty-related data, including systems, stewardship, and business intelligence
Oversee the approval process for staff positions in the academic units.
Serve as the Provost’s representative for various University committees, including the Stewardship Committee of the Board of Trustees and IT Executive Committee.


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree
7+ years of experience in Finance and Budget
5+ years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree preferred
Higher Education experience preferred
