The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Our core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect free, within budget and on time, every time.

The Network and Infrastructure Engineering group mission is to provide and maintain a reliable, resilient, and sustainable core technical infrastructure which securely meets the current and anticipated needs of all programs and initiatives at the Software Engineering Institute. As a Senior Network Operations Engineer, you will participate in technical efforts that evolve the network technologies supporting the SEI mission.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong hands-on knowledge in the configuration, securing, and troubleshooting of Juniper and Cisco network devices, LAN switching technologies, firewalls, routing protocols, VPNs, Linux/UNIX based network services, and monitoring/maintaining all of these to ensure their continued secure operation is required.
Ability to deal with software and network systems integration at various levels (service design, deployment, maintenance).
Ability to participate in conversations collaboratively, diplomatically, and successfully with customers, co-workers and other professional colleagues, managers, and staff.
Employee should possess strong analytical problem solving and troubleshooting abilities
Ability to provide technical support on a 24x7 basis is required, including weekends. There is a rotating on-call component to this position. Must respond to outage events via remote access (in appropriate circumstances) within 30 minutes. Some situations in this role will demand an on-site response within 60 minutes barring adverse weather conditions.
Duties:

Responsible for implementation, maintenance, documentation, and enhancements to the network infrastructures.
Determine the cause of computing problems and take corrective action in a timely fashion when a system/service fails or becomes unavailable.
Provide network expertise to other members of IT and across the organization when needed.
Protect SEI networks from unauthorized access, modification, disclosure, or interference.
Computer hardware installation and configuration required on a periodic basis, sometimes involving transport of heavy objects (typically under 50 lbs.) short distances, use of hand tools, etc.
Support compliance and accreditation activities.
Be creative in ensuring highly reliable solutions, implementing new products and approaches, and enabling automation.
Plan, organize, and exercise independent judgement and sound decisions in your work to meet deadlines and initiatives.
Work as part of a team in a manner consistent with SEI Core Values.
Requirements:

BS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with (3) three to (5) five years of experience or equivalent combination of training and experience; or a degree in other technical fields (e.g., engineering) and years of relevant experience as described above will be considered as well.
Experience as a Network Engineer for a heterogeneous infrastructure in a professional environment.
Ability to provide technical support on a 24x7 basis is required, including weekends and an on-call rotation.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with both technical and non-technical personnel.
Movement between buildings within the SEI and CMU community required.
Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This may include national travel to SEI sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Expected travel: Up to 10%.
You will be subject to a background check and will need to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
Desired Experience:

At least five years’ experience as a network/system administrator for a heterogeneous Windows, Linux, and appliance networked infrastructure in a professional environment required. At least three years relevant experience maintaining and evolving a network for the same organization.
You will also have experience with intrusion/anomaly detection, network forensics, and vulnerability assessment tools/techniques and load balancing technologies.
Additional experience with F5, Cisco ACS/ISE, Ansible, Software Defined Networking, ZTNA, and Azure/AWS is desirable.
Working governmental accreditation requirements for operating IT environments and networks such as NISPOM, DCID, and STIG.
Licenses: Juniper/Cisco certification and experience working with Juniper networking equipment.
