Job Description

The University of Oklahoma invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Costume Technology in the Peggy Dow Helmerich School of Drama, Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts.This faculty member will be expected to: 

  • Teach existing undergraduate courses in Costume Construction, Costume Crafts, Draping and Pattern Drafting 1 and 2, Advanced Costume Construction Techniques. 
  • Develop new courses related to Costume Technology. 
  • Collaborate in creating a proposal for a new BFA emphasis in Costume Technology
  •  Conduct research/creative activity related to the field or allied fields. 
  • Contribute to advising and recruitment of undergraduate students. 
  • Establish efficiency and quality standards for production builds. 
  • Oversee professional development of the costume technical staff. 
  • Assist with production planning in conjunction with Costume Design professor and costume shop supervisor. 
  • Lead in the draping/patternmaking/fittings for difficult and large-scale productions (e.g., historical productions and ballets). 
  • Participate in service activities in the department, college, university, and professional discipline. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Earned Doctorate in costume studies or closely allied field, or M.F.A. in Costume Technology/Design with 3 years of teaching experience at the University level. 
  • Experience creating and teaching undergraduate curriculum. 
  • Demonstrated high level of draping and patternmaking ability. 
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to teach and mentor students.

Required Skills:

  • Introduction to advanced draping 
  • Flat patternmaking 
  • Digital CAD pattern drafting 
  • Tailoring 
  • Advanced costume construction on industrial equipment 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of costume crafts (e.g. millinery, dying techniques and wigs). 
  • Established experience with recruiting at the undergraduate level. 
  • Knowledge of industrial sewing equipment including single bed, sergers, and blind hem machines. 
  • Ability to use current and emerging technologies (e.g., digitizing technology).
