The laboratory that conducts NIH-funded research focused on understanding how astrocytes in the brain change in function with age that makes the brain susceptible to cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration. We focus on mitochondrial function, neuroinflammation and oxidative stress pathways that affect cognitive function. We're a new group committed to fostering diversity in the fields of neuroscience and mitochondrial biology. We're looking for an enthusiastic addition to our growing group. Come join us as we tackle exciting questions in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the College of Medicine.

Duties:

  • Expected to take care of mouse colonies, genotypica, animal ordering and behavior testing.
  • Observes animals for early manifestations of disease such as rapid or labored breathing, or lethargy and reports to designated personnel.
  • Provides food and water to laboratory animals.
  • Transfers animals from soiled to clean enclosures, protecting individuals identity of animals.
  • Ensures laboratory has stable temperature, and humidity levels.
  • Ensures all equipment, bedding, and cages are clean and in working condition.
  • Reports any problems or deviations to designated personnel.
  • Collects blood, tissue, or fluid samples from animals.
  • Restrains animals for examination or injection.
  • Administers pharmaceutical or biological products through intramuscular, subcutaneous, oral or topical route.
  • Maintains records of all activities of the animal laboratory.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience:  12 months experience caring for laboratory animals.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to identify, address issues and deficiencies, and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to handle all types of animals.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

Certifications:

  • An American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT)

Working Conditions:

  • Physical: Stand for prolonged periods. Lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis. Walk, reach, bend, and stoop.
  • Environment: Work in an animal facility handling all types of animals which may bite or scratch. Exposure to odors, animal dander, and a dirty environment.
