POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Biological Scientist will be involved in an ongoing lab project studying cellular and molecular dysfunction in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. He/She will be maintaining a large mouse colony, and be involved in an ongoing lab project studying sleep perturbations and memory impairment. He/She will be performing surgery on mice including intracranial stereotaxic procedure, will be responsible as well to assess mouse memory behaviors using a variety of cognitive tasks. He/She will be performing a variety of cell biology techniques, including Western blotting, immunostaining, and confocal image acquisition. He/She will maintain and transfect cell lines and generate primary neuronal culture. He/She will train new lab members, and provide support to postdoctoral fellows, graduate, and undergraduate students. The Senior Biological Scientist will maintain an inventory of supplies, optimize reagent and resource utilization, and be responsible for ensuring a structured, organized environment for the smooth operation of the lab. He/She will be assigned to additional responsibilities as needed to advance the laboratory's research.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a variety of cognitive tasks (Fear Conditioning, Morris Water Maze, Y-maze, Novel Object Recognition); perform cell biology work including Western blotting, immunostaining, and confocal microscopy, maintain and transfect cell lines and generate primary neuronal culture.

Breeding and genotyping the colony, and assist in the phenotypic characterization of the mice; perform brain injection of AAV in mice that will be subjected to sleep deprivation; perform mouse perfusion and brain dissection.

Perform statistical analysis of data using specially designed computer software, interface computers with data collection equipment, maintains logs and records of observations, findings, and results for use in presentations and publications.

Maintain a well-stocked, organized laboratory [inventory and ordering]; facilitate and participate in the smooth and collegial operation of the research group; train new laboratory members as needed.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural or medical science and 2 years of research experience; or a Master's degree in a natural science. Progressively responsible experience involving scientific laboratory or field work may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED:

- Expertise in cell and molecular biology
- Experience with mouse handling
- Experience of laboratory management
- Previous training in small animal surgery will be an asset.
- Experience in regulatory compliance, including managing biosafety and IACUC protocols preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
