About the Science, Technology, & Society Major:

The Science, Technology, & Society major is a customizable interdisciplinary major that prepares students to engage with complex issues and address emerging challenges which have arisen as a consequence of the interconnectedness of systems in the current era. Students in the Science, Technology, & Society program learn to apply methods of scientific thinking and creative problem solving to confront unstructured, real-world problems faced by individuals, organizations, industries, and societies in ways which cut across traditional boundaries of disciplinary thought. Due to its broad applicability and high degree of customizability, Science, Technology, & Society is one of the most popular majors on campus with roughly 1300 students enrolled in the program each year.

Job Description:

Farmingdale State College invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Science, Technology, & Society. The successful candidate will teach upper division courses in scientific thinking and interdisciplinary research methods as well as design and teach courses related to their specific field of expertise (e.g. history and philosophy of science, health and medicine, race and gender in science and technology, environmental justice, big data and artificial intelligence, etc.).

All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications and presentation, both of which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College. The service component of the workload includes student advisement as well as active participation on departmental, school and college-wide committees. The faculty member may be expected to teach in multiple formats including hybrid, online and traditional face-to-face classes.

Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in STS or related field awarded by Sept. 1, 2023
Record of interdisciplinary research and scholarly activity
Evidence of teaching excellence with at least one year of experience teaching at the college level
Excellent written and oral communications skills
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with online teaching
Prior experience with course and/or program development
