Overview
With 19 departments and spanning the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest of NIU’s six undergraduate colleges. By the nature of our mission, we touch virtually every new student to the university, regardless of their major, through the wide array of general education courses housed within our departments.

Position Summary
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking a System Administrator who will serve as the first point of contact in IT department for escalated requests regarding Linux/Windows servers. This individual is responsible for a broad range of Linux systems and network administration duties. They will manage and monitor all server systems, appliances and server applications, review performance and resource utilization, ensure systems and applications receive appropriate security patches and features updates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The job designs automated, scalable, and rapidly deployable solutions to infrastructure development and server configuration. Works independently to install, configure, and maintain operating systems.
Uses best practices and systems knowledge to monitor and alert systems, utility software, and cybersecurity. Guides maintenance for production servers as well as Windows and Linux servers.
Installs and maintains independent software packages across multiple systems and manages a large suite of software licenses.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
1. Any combination totaling two (2) years from the following categories:

A. progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession

B. college course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 60 semester hours or Associate’s Degree equals one (1) year
- 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor’s Degree equals two (2) years

2. At least one (1) year of professional experience in each of the following fields (may be concurrent):

Managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and OS installation.
Working in a multi-platform network environment including mail service and client support, backup and restore technologies, Macintosh and PC communication software support, and various graphical user interfaces.
Linux operating systems.
Standard programming languages such as Python, Ruby, C, C++, and Bash shell scripting.
System administration issues in a large and complex client server environment.

(a) system administration support of heterogeneous operating system environments including at least Windows and Linux,
(b) computer and peripheral support,
