Job Description

The Vice President for Research, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center,  provides executive oversight and strategic guidance to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center’s research and innovation enterprise and is responsible for growing the research portfolio, impact, and stature of the academic health center in support of the OUHSC Strategic Plan and strategic research mission.  This position is responsible for the development and dissemination of official policies in the research and creative activity arena, as well as for the facilitation of faculty, student, and staff scholarship in all disciplines represented on the HSC campus and in HSC campus programs on the OU-Tulsa campus. The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, coordinates with researchers and other administrators to identify funding for research and creative endeavors, both in and outside the University, and assists with the development and enhancement of research laboratories and facilities.

The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, will develop and execute research strategic initiatives based on the OUHSC Strategic Plan, including growing National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants through disease-focused and interdisciplinary research and centers of excellence; expanding clinical trials; increasing commercialization of biotech, pharmaceutical, and medical device technologies; and improving health outcomes through dissemination and implementation of best practices for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, reports and is directly accountable to the University President and the Senior Vice President and Provost of the OU Health Sciences Center. The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, supervises the following research functions: strategic research initiatives of the OUHSC Strategic Plan, pre-award and post-award non-financial grants and contracts management; core laboratory facilities; research space management; research-related capital improvement projects; animal care and use program; human research participant protection program, and research integrity.  The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, collaborates with the peer Vice President for Research and Partnerships position at the Norman campus to develop and promote University-wide grants, programs, and centers, and jointly supervises the Chief Innovation and Commercialization Officer and staff and the Director of Export Controls.  The Vice President for Research, OUHSC, oversees research programs across the colleges and centers of the OU Health Sciences Center, as well as across the academic health system OU Health.  This executive leader serves on the President’s executive team, the HSC Leadership Committee, and the Research Strategic Plan Oversight Committee for the OU Health Sciences Center.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement the research components of the OUHSC Research Strategic Plan; report progress and success using established key performance indicators 
  • Advance the research reputation and ranking of the academic health system by elevating the strategic advancement and support of the research mission, resulting in a top 100 Blue Ridge Institute ranking in 5 years
  • Improve the researcher experience in partnership with OU Health, and through strengthened research infrastructure and expanded campus-wide investments in technology and facilities
  • Increase clinical trials and enrollment by expanding research collaborations with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies
  • Lead the implementation of programs and deployment of resources to meet emerging research opportunities, including in HSC research centers.
  • Facilitate, strengthen, and enhance the research infrastructure of the University and provide administrative support and oversight to promote compliance and management of the research infrastructure 
  • Promote interdisciplinary and team-based science and work collaboratively to assist faculty across all disciplines in achieving their scholarly goals and the strategic mission of the research and creative activity enterprise
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain outstanding research faculty, staff, post-docs, and students and foster internal and external recognition of OUHSC research success
  • Collaborate with the OU Foundation Advancement team and others to increase philanthropic, federal, and state funding in support of research
  • Cultivate and expand relationships with industry, government, and private foundations that support research

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

  • An advanced degree is required, with preference for an MD/PhD, PhD, or MD
  • Ten years of progressive leadership responsibility at an academic health center or biomedical research institute is required, preferably including research administration experience
  • Recognition as a scholar with achievements in research; tenured full professor
  • Deep understanding of federal compliance and regulatory policies for research enterprise, especially Human Research Protection Programs
  • Service with national research organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Proven experience leading large programmatic and multidisciplinary federally-funded projects
  • Supports inclusive excellence in research programs
  • Experience with operational management 
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external constituencies 
  • Experience growing research in ways that support the educational missions of the academic health system and University
  • Personal and professional integrity and high ethical standards
