Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM)/Animal Care Program (ACP), the Animal Care and Facility Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing daily activities involved with the provision of animal husbandry, cage washing, and facility operations at multiple CCM/ACP facilities.  The Animal Care and Facility Operations Manager also participates with CCM/ACP senior leadership, COH/BRI leadership, faculty, health and safety departments and IACUC to maintain a safe working environment compliant with all legal mandates, animal welfare regulations and guidelines and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities include:

Fiscal Management

  • Participates in developing and managing annual budgets for CCM/ACP.
  • Provides input for program cost studies and rate setting.

Personnel Management

  • Mentors and supervises CCM/ACP animal care and cage wash supervisors and their teams.
  • Oversees, approves or delegates authority for personnel actions including; hiring, termination, disciplinary action, promotions and performance review.

Facility Management

  • Works with COH Engineering, contractors and equipment vendors to ensure the maintenance of the facilities and the performance of equipment and mechanical systems.

Quality/Customer Service

  • Monitors the quality of care and service of the animal care and use program, addresses customer complaints and issues and approves facility access. 

Program Management

  • Collaboratively monitors and establishes process improvement to meet the business needs of the organization and/or enhance the institutional animal care and use program. 
  • Manages the procurement of equipment and supplies, interacts with COH/BRI administration and faculty re-programmatic issues, develops standard operating procedures, and participates in strategic planning, space allocation and implementation of new systems and decision making.

Communication

  • Pre-reviews IACUC protocols, assists the senior leadership of CCM/ACP, and assists with preparing the AAALAC program description.
  • Prepares internal studies, newsletter articles, staff meeting presentations, etc.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree relevant to areas of responsibility.  Associate degree and more than 7 years relevant supervisory experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree.
  • 5 years relevant supervisory animal care and/or operational experience.
  • Working knowledge of all general activities of an animal facility (cage wash equipment and operations, barrier and conventional animal housing, biohazard containment, quarantine, etc.)

 

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • AALAS LATG certification, CA driver license.

Preferred education, experience and skills:

  • Master’s degree relevant to areas of responsibility.
  • CMAR certification.
  • More than 5 years relevant supervisory animal care and/or operational experience.
