Job Summary
The Department of Chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure track position in inorganic chemistry at the assistant professor level beginning fall 2023. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry or a closely related field; experience teaching at the undergraduate level; experience mentoring undergraduate students in research; and a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Our ACS-approved chemistry department is equipped with major and modern instrumentation that is used in both our teaching and research.  Our faculty members are active scholars, who lead externally funded research and pedagogical projects.  Applications are encouraged from applicants with a strong background in current or emerging areas of inorganic chemistry. The department is particularly interested in candidates with a background in materials science and/or sustainable energy. The department is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups.

Duties
Teach undergraduate general and inorganic chemistry lecture and lab sequences, and the option to teach advanced courses in the area of the applicant’s expertise. The mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, remote, and/or any combination thereof.
Supervise and mentor undergraduate research students leading to publications and professional presentations.
Develop and sustain independent and externally funded research.
Participate in service activities for the department, university, and the local community.

The Department of Chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana is one of the highest-ranked undergraduate programs in the country for students from underrepresented areas in the sciences. The Department offers several degree programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the undergraduate level only. The Department has more than 360 majors, the majority of whom pursue professional school in the health professions or graduate study after graduation. Minimum Qualifications
PhD in Inorganic Chemistry or Closely Related Field;
Strong commitment to teaching twelve semester hours per semester;
Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes;
Demonstrated a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students;
Commitment to developing an active research program within the area of the applicant’s expertise, including seeking external funding and submitting scholarly articles;
Established record of research productivity, proportional to experience, in an area mentioned above;
Commitment to academic advising for majors within the department; and
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications
Advanced training beyond the Ph.D., e.g. Post-doc, industry, etc.
Successful experience teaching undergraduate courses in inorganic chemistry.
Established track record of meaningful mentorship of undergraduate students.
Successful experience teaching chemistry to a diverse student body and knowledge of effective strategies (e.g. culturally responsive or inclusive pedagogy, awareness of issues that may affect the success of minoritized students) supporting underrepresented groups in STEM.
Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area.
A research project that complements existing department research and instrumentation.
