Summary

The Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH)/Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Psychology Section is seeking a Research Coordinator I. The candidate will be involved with behavioral research studies of management of pediatric type 1 diabetes. This position will oversee study conduct in coordination with the PI, and will conduct day to day activities of clinical research protocols, including data collection/management, participant recruitment/retention, and supporting the delivery of a behavioral intervention protocol to study participants. Respectful, patient-centered interactions with participants, medical providers, and staff are expected at all times.

The successful candidate will be trained in skills and information relevant to behavioral diabetes research, including: 

  • Learning about type 1 diabetes by observing patient/family diabetes care and completing readings and tutorials with Marisa Hilliard, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, and other diabetes experts at TCH. 
  • Learning to collect and manage data from questionnaires, qualitative interviews, diabetes-related devices, and electronic medical records 
  • Learning to use the electronic medical record to identify and track patients 
  • Learning how to recruit and enroll eligible families, and to obtain informed consent for behavioral research
  • Learning to complete required compliance-related documentation for behavioral research
  • Learning to work independently and as part of a larger study team

Job Duties

  • Contributes to study at Texas Children’s Hospital site and coordinates with study staff at collaborating external sites which may include:
    • Assisting with interviews, screens, and recruits patients/families for studies; explains processes and procedures to educate participant regarding research study by telephone, email, and in busy outpatient and inpatient medical settings. Evening and weekend telephone calls may be needed. 
    • Collecting, processing, shipping, and maintaining paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol
  • Collects and manages survey data, interviews with study participants, downloads data from diabetes management devices, and completes electronic medical record reviews.
  • Maintains databases in Microsoft Excel, RedCAP, and similar databases as needed and assists with maintenance of records and regulatory documents and records for research studies.
  • Coordinates closely and collaborates with other study team members
  • Conducts research literature searches related to the study.
  • Completes all required training modules related to the Responsible Conduct of Research (e.g., CITI Program training).

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a medical or social science field (e.g., pre-med, psychology, public health, sociology) is required and a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with behavioral science research is required. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Excel is required. RedCAP and electronic health record experience preferred. 
  • Experience with culturally diverse children and families is preferred.
