Job Description

Summary

Performs various high-complexity clinical laboratory tests, optimizes and troubleshoots procedures, and analyzes results. Will be principally responsible for performing sperm morphology assessment; DNA fragmentation assay; hormone analysis; and therapeutic reproductive cell processing and cryopreservation. 

 

The ideal candidate has a solid science background, is highly motivated, has a high degree of intellectual and technical maneuverability, and has the ability to apply their prior and continually developing science knowledge and laboratory experience towards effectively optimizing and developing new protocols.

Job Duties

  • Perform sperm morphology assessment; DNA fragmentation assay; hormone analysis; and therapeutic reproductive cell processing and cryopreservation.
  • Perform, as needed , FISH assays for the identification of abnormal chromosome content in reproductive and non-reproductive cells.
  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results, including inputting data into computerized databases.
  • Perform quality control procedures, adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, collect data for QA/QC reports, document all quality control activities, including instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory manager or technical supervisor/director.
  • Perform new or "nonstandard" procedures, assist in the development of new procedures, optimize and troubleshoot procedures, implement new or revised policies, and implement quality control changes as they arise.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with CLIA reporting requirements and regulatory policies.
  • Assist in maintaining/cleaning/calibrating equipment used for testing and/or sample processing.
  • Assist in the assembly and auditing of patient processing records.
  • Release final patient report to physicians.
  • Dispose of contaminated laboratory supplies according to OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Maintain knowledge of techniques, instruments, and principles by participating in continuing education through attending seminars, meetings, in-services, and review of procedure manuals.
  • Maintain the supply inventory in the laboratory.
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, CLS, Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology or related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Certified by either ASCP, AMT, HEW, or board eligible or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Meet the standard requirements for high-complexity testing personnel according to CLIA 493.1489, which includes either;
    • 1.) having earned a doctoral, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
    • 2.) having obtained at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and a.) having laboratory training that includes either completion of an approved/accredited clinical laboratory training program (approved/accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS) or b.) have at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual will perform high-complexity testing (ie. must have documented and verifiable expertise performing laboratory procedures of similar scope).
  • For individuals who meet the CLIA requirements with a Bachelor of Science degree, or less, at least 1-year relevant wet bench experience (non-coursework based) is required.
  • Copies of certifications and diplomas and unofficial copies of transcripts must be uploaded as extra file(s) with initial application. Official transcripts must be sent for final consideration for position.
