Summary

The Neurosurgery Department at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant I. This position involves performing responsible research work that requires planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the supervisor. The RA I will be involved in a Laser interstitial thermal therapy project on mouse brain tumors and will perform research tasks, image analysis of animals, analyze data and report to their supervisor. Experience with animal surgery, FACS sorting and analysis and laboratory tissue culture is desirable.

Job Duties

  • Performs basic molecular biology techniques and collects and compiles data.
  • Performs animal surgery experiments and document and interprets results of experiments.
  • Maintains tissue cultures for animal surgery experiments.
  • Works closely and interacts with lab personnel to assist them in their animal experiments and surgery.
  • Performs routine sample processing for IHC analysis.
  • Tracks inventory of reagents/supplies required and maintains log records etc. for the animal surgery.
  • Develops expertise in new technologies for animal surgery (laser interstitial thermal therapy).
  • Assists with protocol development and compliance for laser surgery of animals.
  • Engages in FACS sorting and analysis.
  • Cultures virus-specific cells required for animal surgery experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with animal surgery, FACS sorting and analysis and laboratory tissue culture is preferred.
