JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to join our Drivetrain Technology Center (DTC) in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities' engineering and technology needs.

You will:

Oversee all day to day aspects of testing in the DTC/Gear Research Institute test facility and
Report test progress to the principal investigators and other engineering personnel and
Collaborate with principal investigators daily
Perform inspections of test articles and document results
Design and implement program specific test stand hardware changes
Generate designs and manufacturing drawings for new test specimens and machine parts
Field technical questions from vendors as they produce components to ensure parts are made correctly
Assist with design and construction of new test equipment
Troubleshoot malfunctioning test equipment both mechanical and electrical
Install and use instrumentation such as strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers, etc.
Responsible for day to day procurement of lab supplies
Supervise interns
This job will be filled as a level 3 or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience Typically requires an Associate’s Degree or higher in a technical program and four years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

Higher level responsibilities include:

Work with engineers to plan, design, and assemble new test equipment
Assign tasking for lower level support staff
Provide input for preventive maintenance and test planning schedules
May evaluate, implement and test new gear performance evaluation procedures
Required skills and experience include:

Proficiency in 3D modeling software (Solidworks, Inventor, or similar CAD package)
Working knowledge of GD&T (geometric product specifications)
Working knowledge of metalworking/machining techniques
Assembly of mechanical systems, test and maintenance of mechanical systems
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
The ability to work independently as well as in teams
Preferred skills and experience include:

Assembly, operation and troubleshooting of mechanical systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
Knowledge of gear theory, gear terminology, gear manufacturing techniques, gear failure mechanisms, etc.
