Faculty Positions in Neuroengineering
The Schools of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invite applications from highly qualified individuals for multiple full-time, tenure-track and tenured positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor, based on experience and qualifications. Appointments are available in any Engineering department appropriate to the candidate’s research and teaching interests; within the Biomedical Engineering Department, primary appointments are available in both the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine. Secondary appointments in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurobiology, and other departments are available if appropriate. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Engineering or related fields (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Biology) and have previous research experience in neuroengineering / neural engineering; a proven track record of competitive funding as PI is preferred. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research and be nationally recognized for their scholarship.

Research Areas
Ideal candidates will have a strong record of research and scholarship in neuroengineering / neural engineering. Current areas of neuroengineering research at UAB include neural signal and image analysis using machine learning, deep learning, and related approaches; invasive and noninvasive neuromodulation including deep brain stimulation (DBS), focused ultrasound (FUS), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS); connection of devices to the human brain or nervous system (brain-computer interfaces); computational modeling of receptor-ligand interactions in the brain; and anatomic and functional mapping using electrode arrays, EEG, ECoG, iEEG, MEG, and MRI.

Neuroengineering and Neuroscience at UAB
The Schools of Engineering and Medicine are located on the same physical campus in the heart of Birmingham, just a few minutes’ walk apart. Research in neuroengineering is enabled by extensive collaboration with the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery in the School of Medicine and with the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center, which has more than 350 members supported by $130M in active grants. Reflecting the excitement around multi-disciplinary collaboration in this area, UAB recently launched a University-wide Consortium for Neuroengineering and Brain-Computer Interfaces and a cross-school Ph.D. program in Neuroengineering. Clinical areas of strength include stroke and vascular disease, movement disorders, memory disorders, epilepsy, neuroimmunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disease and neuro-oncology. There are active programs in deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery, and the functional neurosurgery group performs 250 awake craniotomies per year, providing excellent opportunities for in vivo human recording. There are active programs in functional and molecular neuroimaging. Key NIH Center and infrastructure awards include a Morris K. Udall Center of Excellence in Parkinson’s Research, an NIA funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and an NIH Brain Initiative UH3 award. UAB is a site for NeuroNEXT, the NIH network for phase II trials, and StrokeNet, which supports NIH clinical trials in stroke. UAB also has a rich history and portfolio of neurorehabilitation research supported by NIH, CDC, and NIDILRR, including Spinal Cord and Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems grants.

The School of Engineering
The UAB School of Engineering is dedicated to research excellence and providing the highest quality education to a diverse population of future engineers. The School has approximately 50 full-time faculty members and enrolls nearly 900 undergraduates across 6 undergraduate majors in four departments: Biomedical Engineering; Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Our undergraduate programs emphasize practical, hands-on learning complemented by a guaranteed internship. Over 500 graduate students pursue a range of programs including traditional on-campus M.S./Ph.D. pathways as well as online M.Eng. degrees for working professionals. The school has close ties to companies in Birmingham, which serves as a regional hub for the construction, materials, power, and biotech industries.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering at UAB is a joint department, with some faculty holding primary appointments in the School of Engineering and some appointed in the School of Medicine. This arrangement provides career paths ranging from a research-focused path typical of a medical school basic science department to a balanced teaching and research path typical of a school of Engineering. The Department is nationally recognized in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and houses both an $11M PPG and a T32 training grant from the National Institutes of Health. UAB’s Biomedical Engineering graduate program is among the top-3 public BME programs in the South according to US News and World Report.

Required Qualifications
