The Department of Black Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara seeks to hire an outstanding senior scholar for an endowed chair position titled the North Hall Chair with a start date of July 1, 2022 or later. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research and scholarship focus on the structures of and resistance to anti-Black racism. The Department of Black Studies was founded at UC Santa Barbara as a result of the 1968 student take- over of the North Hall building on campus. This Chair appointment honors that event and continuing student activism as part of a cluster hire of four endowed North Hall Chairs across campus. The North Hall Chair is intended to bring to campus faculty with outstanding records of research who also have a strong record of undergraduate mentorship. We seek a candidate whose research will strengthen our present scholarship on knowledge, traditions, and activism in Black Studies and enhance our ability to mentor the next generation of scholars who will make transforming contributions to scholarship in the discipline.
All areas of research specialization will be considered, although we are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus on social justice and racial inequalities. Candidates whose research engages with the intellectual traditions of Black Studies and Black Feminist epistemologies are especially encouraged to apply. The North Hall Chair joins a vibrant faculty in the department and across the campus with pioneering research in the Black radical tradition, African Diasporic intellectual history, Black Queer and Trans studies, Black critical education studies, Black beauty and adornment, Afro- Diasporic and Caribbean religion and performance studies, Environmental Racism and Policing, Climate Change and Sustainability, and Global Black urban inequalities. The North Hall Chair is expected to have a demonstrated record of mentoring Black undergraduate and graduate students and a strong commitment to continuing that record at UCSB. An engagement with public and university service that addresses the needs of Black people is required of all successful candidates.
This appointment will be made to an outstanding scholar at the full or associate rank, and the North Hall Chair will support the scholarly and programmatic activities of the faculty member. Candidates should have an outstanding record of research, publication, teaching, student mentorship, and professional and public service.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Applicant must hold a PhD in Black Studies or a related social science, humanities, STEM, or education discipline at the associate or full professor rank at the time of application.
Applicants research and scholarship should focus on the structures of and resistance to the persistence and consequences of anti-Black racism in America and/or the world.
Active research program as demonstrated through publication in peer-reviewed journals articles and/or books. All areas of research specialization will be considered, although we are particularly interested in candidates with outstanding records of achievement, whose research and teaching engages with the intellectual traditions of Black Studies and Black Feminist epistemologies with a focus on social justice.
Demonstrated record of excellence in mentoring undergraduates as reflected in quantitative and qualitative evaluations, statement of teaching, letters of reference, and the interview process.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
An engagement with public and university service that addresses the needs of Black people is required of all successful candidates.
