Job Summary

The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for a full­time tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor with a specialization in Contemporary and/or Modern art history, beginning Fall 2023. Knowledge of Museum or Curatorial Studies is highly desirable. The ability to also teach some non-Western art courses is preferable. This is a full-time position that may require in-person presence on the UT Tyler main campus five days a week.

Essential Functions

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Teach three (3) courses per semester, including but not limited to: Introduction to Art, Art History Survey II (Renaissance to late Twentieth Century), Contemporary Issues, Modern Art, American Art, Nineteenth-Century Art, Exhibition Practicum, Curatorial Studies, and other combined upper-level/graduate-level courses as needed.
Engage in research and scholarly activities consistent with rank.
Service to the department, college, university, and profession.
Service to the department may include: academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students, supervising BA art history graduating senior thesis papers and presentations, supervising MA art history theses or comprehensive exams, serve as faculty mentor to art history graduate students, participate in mid-term graduate studio visits and end of semester graduate critiques, serving on MA and/or MFA graduate committees, serving on a variety of university and departmental committees, working with community organizations (such as the Tyler Museum of Art) to oversee student internships, supervising of the art and art history student organization, participating in departmental, university and community sponsored events.


Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Art History or closely related field required in hand by August 1, 2023.
Specialization in modern and contemporary art history.
Museum or curatorial studies experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Graduate or post-graduate teaching experience.
Experience with Canvas.
Experience with online/full distance and face-to-face delivery modes.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
