Job Description


Dr. Erica Soltero is an assistant professor in the Children’s Nutrition Research Center in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. The focus of her research is implementing community-based diabetes prevention programs for Hispanic youth and families. This work involves behavioral studies to investigate the influence of physical activity and sedentary behaviors on the development and prevention of type 2 diabetes. It also includes qualitative work focused on identifying social determinants of health that influence diabetes risk in Hispanic youth and families.


Dr. Soltero is currently seeking to hire a student helper who will participate in daily research activities which include a variety of job duties centered on participant interaction, development of project materials, assisting with scholarly work, data collection, and working collaboratively with the research team in her lab and community partners. 

Job Duties

  • Assists with day to day activities of research protocols, which include screening, enrollment, collecting data, and monitoring of research participants.
  • Ensures accurate data collection, documentation, organization and safety of research participants.
  • Ensures that project goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time limitations, funding limitations or other specifications.
  • Interviews, screens, and recruits participants for studies.
  • Explains processes and procedures to educate participant regarding the research study and obtain informed consent.
  • Collects data and documents from participants and enter information into a database. 
  • Collects (point-of-care devices), processes, and maintains paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlines in study protocol (on the job training for these activities will be provided).
  • Obtains vital signs and measures anthropometrics (weight, height, waist circumference) on participants (on the job training for these activities will be provided).
  • Schedules research participants for tests and procedures such as lab tests, intervention sessions, and other studies specific for the research protocol.
  • Attends lab meetings and assists in recording meeting minutes.
  • Maintains project resources, including facilitating orders for supplies and equipment.
  • Assists in developing manuscripts, progress reports, and grants, by developing data tables, conducting literature reviews, and manuscript formatting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in the undergraduate or graduate studies programs in a health related field.
  • Strong interest in health-related field.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Work independently in a fast-paced environment 
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills in additional computer software for physical activity and qualitative data collection (Actigraph, Nvivo).
  • Applicants that are proficient (reading, writing, and speaking) in Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply. Given that Dr. Soltero’s work is centered in the Hispanic population, it is necessary for obtaining parental consent, recruitment, data collection, and overall project management, that the research coordinator speak Spanish.
