At this point in the M.A. in Leadership program, learners have examined personal values, theories of leadership, systems, research methods, cultural contexts and other elements of understanding and exercising leadership. It is now time to consider one’s future leadership practice, and what steps to take to continue to learn and develop in that direction as learners leave the program. Learners will begin to focus thinking on both how to exercise leadership in the work place and in community, and how to lead one’s self.

Specifically, in this course learners, individually and in peer groups, will explore approaches to continuous engagement, organizational change, learning and feedback that draw these connections between self-awareness and systems awareness; illuminate blind spots; and lead to an understanding of how to be a learning organism continuously growing in leadership capacity in a learning organization continuously growing in leadership capacity.

On the micro level, the focus is on how individuals learn and practice leadership now and projected into the future. On the macro level, learners will explore ways to engage others and develop and exercise leadership in peer contexts that are self-driven. By the end of the course, learners should possess a specific set of practices that will, over time, enable one to exercise leadership in a collaborative manner.

Themes and principles from previous modules in the programs will be brought forward and integrated in this course. These threads include:

· The future of organizations and leadership

· Aligning values, behavior and structures

· Reflection & self-awareness

· Coaching stance

· Cultivating leadership in others

Course Objectives

Learners gain a deeper understanding of principles and skills for engaging colleagues in change processes and explore specific distinctions about the practice of building a collaborative leadership relationship.

Each learner will complete a brief peer-based and colleague-based action-learning project practicing in a safe environment how one learns about their own leadership and, subsequently, identifying practices that will enable the individual to learn in an ongoing way. This activity is a revision of earlier papers that will be built upon based on a new values survey and a small set of interviews. Learners will complete this objective in several steps. See the Assignments List and weekly folders for information on completing each step.

Learners will continue to develop the implementation of their final project. Learners are expected to be self-directed in the shepherding of their final projects and to work closely with their project advisors.

Requirements:

Experience teaching online/hybrid courses

Experience working with learning communities

Experience coaching learners
