This course will be taught on the Moraga campus, in person, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am - 9:35am during the 2023 Spring term.

Course Description:

This course is a study of the first five books of the Bible, variously called the Torah or the Pentateuch. They are considered to be the most sacred texts in the Hebrew Bible, and they are deeply formative of both the Jewish and Christian religious traditions. We will strive to interpret
the texts through the lenses of multiple methods with an emphasis on the historical, linguistic, and socio-cultural perspectives. Throughout we will have an eye on the theologies generated by various ways of reading the texts and how the texts have been used and abused over the
centuries.

Qualifications:

Candidates for this position ideally should possess an earned doctorate in theology and/or religious studies or biblical studies with a documented specialization in exegesis of the Pentateuch with an emphasis on the historical, linguistic, and socio-cultural perspectives and a
deep familiarity in the role these texts have played in the Jewish and Christian religious traditions. Those who have reached the ABD stage in their active progress toward a doctoral degree (i.e., completion of all qualifying and competency examinations) will also be considered.
Experience in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek along with experience in socio-scientific approaches to give a full socio-linguistic spectrum of the Pentateuch is highly desired. Preference will be given to candidates with evidence of teaching effectiveness in biblical studies, particularly among undergraduates.

Candidates must reside in California.
