SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY – The Department of Drama, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a highly ranked BFA program uniquely integrated with a major regional theater, seeks to hire a guest visiting artist to serve as associate music director and chief accompanist for the Spring 2023 semester. We are looking for a collaborative colleague who will participate in the life of a vibrant department, and whose professional experience and creative activity will contribute to the advancement of equity, diversity, and cultural wealth. Selected candidate will serve as Music Director or Associate Music Director for one or more departmental productions in the spring semester, accompany classes and auditions, and depending on expertise, may teach one or more courses in the Musical Theater curriculum. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus significant experience as a pianist and music director for Musical Theater at the university and/or professional level are required.
Job Specific Qualifications
Demonstrated excellence as a pianist and accompanist.
Ability to adapt and arrange music as needed, as part of music direction and production preparation.
Ability to lead both student vocal ensembles and professional instrumental ensembles with confidence.
Extensive knowledge of the Musical Theater repertoire.
Demonstrated collaborative and artistic skill.
Ability and willingness to collaborate with faculty in all programs (Acting, Musical Theater, Theater Design and Technology, Stage Management, and Theater Management) in the ongoing life of a top-quality pre-professional training program
Responsibilities
Serve as Music Director or Associate Music Director for the Spring Department of Drama Musical (including rehearsal piano and pit performance)
Serve as Music Director and pianist for New Works, New Voices (approximately three-week development process, plus arranging and score preparation work as needed)
Serve as primary accompanist for the following department classes and/or activities: Musical Theater performance classes; auditions (prospective student auditions, auditions for productions, visiting guest auditions); voice lessons/studio voice classes; visiting guest master classes.
Based on expertise and interest, additional responsibilities may include offering private vocal instruction and/or teaching one or two courses in the musical theater curriculum (e.g., History of Musical Theater, Foundations of Musical Theater)
