The University of Oklahoma seeks an enthusiastic team player to serve as the Charge Scenic Artist in our nationally recognized BFA training program. The Charge Scenic Artist is responsible for supporting the artistic vision of directors and designers as it relates to all painting and scenic treatments for our diverse nine-show season. The ability to create and teach Scenic painting techniques and surface treatments to Fine Arts students, including but not limited translucencies, carving, texturing, ageing, distressing, marbling and wood graining is essential. Also of importance is proven ability in personnel management and budgeting; excellent work ethic including attention to detail, time management, work flow management, self-motivation, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to collaborate and work as part of a team; flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings as necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

  • Ability to translate designer’s renderings, notes and color elevations into meaningful samples and full scale
  • Train and supervise students in basic theatre artistic skills
  • Collaborate with technical director to project budgetary needs for scenic painting area
  • Maintain paint budgets, purchasing, and equipment
  • Assist in organization, and maintenance of  paint shop equipment and promote shop safety
  • Attend meetings as needed
  • Assist with events in University Theatre
 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor Degree 

Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

Skills:

  • Experience with a variety of styles and techniques of painting
  • Color mixing, layout, and faux treatment skills
  • Interpret designers’ paint elevations and develop them into full-scale scenic treatments
  • Ability to organize and maintain inventory of painting supplies and tools
  • Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Ability to work with an active production program and supervise groups of students
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Clear, correct, and effective communication using the English language

Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's license

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Able to adapt quickly to changing physical activities. Must be able to lift 50lbs, push, pull, move, engage in repetitive motion. Able to move large items such as grand pianos and road boxes (all on wheels).

Departmental Preferences:

  • Terminal degree (MFA) in theatre
