Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer is primarily responsible for providing a full range of learning design services for the EdTech Center in collaboration with faculty, ITS, and CTLS in the following areas: prepare courses for the Canvas learning platform, research and develop innovations to the online learning portion of the Digital Literacy Program for faculty, and enhance the competency of faculty and students in using online learning technologies. Additionally, the Instructional Designer will work with SMC faculty at-large, providing consultation, training and support for adoption and use of technology to support the College's curriculum and academic delivery, both in the classroom, online and hybrid environment. Such work will often include analysis, development, and implementation of instructional design strategies as a complement to the effort faculty put forward in development of their curriculum and course content.

1. Provides instructional design support to faculty through consultation with individuals and collaborative course design teams. Assists faculty in the development of course materials for delivery of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses. Assists faculty with conversion of face-to-face courses to hybrid and online formats. Collaborates, assists, develops and participates in facilitation of professional development workshops and symposia, particularly with regard to course design, online teaching, and technology-enhanced instruction

2. Enhance the competency of faculty and students in using online learning technologies. Available for faculty and student questions, especially for those struggling with Canvas. Conduct both in-person and virtual training for faculty and students. Develop tutorials that are available online for all faculty and students. Orient, train and support faculty in the use of current and emerging educational technologies.

3. Research and develop innovations to the Faculty Tech Camp for faculty. Help faculty with new and improved ways of presenting information. Stay current on latest trends. For example, this might include how to do a video/Tech Tip weekly announcement, a talking PowerPoint, recorded mini lecture, or the most effective way to track student engagement. Offer regular skill-building trainings (in-person and via webinar) to put these innovations into practice. Maintain, diagnose and troubleshoot applications used in teaching and learning by faculty, staff and students.

4. Explore and recommend innovations for the Faculty Tech Camp - Coordinate the planning, efforts, marketing, promotional materials, outreach, and dissemination of the large Faculty Tech Camp Initiatives such as the Book Club, Speaker Series, Roundtable Discussions, and Webinar series.

5. Work with the other EdTech team members on Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL & EdTech Center) events to promote faculty learning communities across SMC Campus.

6. Provide administrative support for academic systems, such as the learning management system (Canvas). Serve as the liaison between departments and IT Services for course and program review.

7. Other Duties as Assigned All other initiatives related to the development, promotion and advancement of the Faculty Tech Camp as a part of the college's Strategic Plan as directed by the Director of Educational Technology.

Experience and Qualifications

Education: REQUIRED: Bachelor's Degree or 5 years of pertinent professional experience PREFERRED: Master's Degree, preferrably in the field of Instructional Design/Educational Technology or similar

Experience: (years required and applicable field of experience): 5 years work in an educational IT setting. Knowledge of contemporary teaching, learning and scholarship methods and expectations.

Skills/Abilities: (e.g. computer skills, written & verbal skills, trades, laws, procedures, technical) Looking for a candidate who is a flexible self-starter with a passion for technology and continuous improvement who is able to work in a highly collaborative environment and can engage faculty participation in innovations. Must have evidence of exceptional instructional design competency. Desire a candidate with tech experience in higher education; a plus if s/he has experience outside higher education as well. Desire a candidate with Canvas experience. Desire a candidate with QM certification. Must have excellent project management skills. Helpful if the candidate has teaching experience. Excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills highly desired. Experience and skill with Turn-It-In, a plus. Needs an understanding of some digital design, marketing, and graphical skills. Experience with social media tools highly desirable. Proficiency with a broad (and expanding)

array of educational/instructional technologies, along with a keen aptitude to keep pace with faculty adoption and use of these technologies; ability to work well individually/autonomously, and also solidly in support of team effort.

Other Requirements: (e.g. travel, weekend/evening work) Will need to work on weekends and evenings occasionally, to participate in faculty meetings, orientation and commencement, for example. Travel for professional development as needed.
