The core purpose of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships (OVPRP) at the University of Oklahoma is igniting and catalyzing excellence in research and creative activities to change lives.

Through our marketing and communications efforts directed through the OVPRP, we elevate the impact of the research and creative activities occurring across the OU Norman campus every day in support of the Lead On, University Strategic Plan and the strategic research priorities defined in Pillar 5.

The Communications Specialist will work with the OVPRP Director of Marketing and Communications and Web Manager/Graphic Designer to ideate, research, develop and execute a full suite of marketing and communications efforts in support of OU Norman research and creative activities, as well as fulfill the marketing and communications needs of the OVPRP-related centers and institutes. The Communications Specialist is expected to be a highly proficient writer with skill at communicating complex topics quickly and clearly. Additional preferred skills include exceptional time and task management, proficiency in AP style and copyediting, as well as the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with faculty and research staff to promote research and creative activities through developing news releases, media advisories, website content, multimedia content development and more. Typical pace includes the development of two or more stories per week with multiple projects underway at any given time.
  • Meets regularly with OVPRP Director of Marketing and Communications, as well as leadership for the OVPRP-related center and institutes to ensure communications align with strategic goals.
  • Creates, edits, and maintains web pages and digital content in support of the OVPRP and affiliated centers and institutes.
  • Generates, monitors and tracks analytics for digital media content including e-newsletters, social media content and more.
  • Creates and disseminates monthly metrics reports that outline results of OVPRP Marketing and Communications efforts.
  • Independently manages and oversees assigned projects and tasks.
 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or a related field, AND: 

  • 24 months experience in marketing, public relations or communications.

Skills:

  • Exceptional written communication proficiency and knowledge of AP style
  • Exceptional project mangagement skills to plan, produce and evaluate content from ideation to completion
  • Proficiency in editing, proofreading and composition
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple, sometimes competing, projects and deadlines
  • Develop good rapport with OVPRP team members and affiliates, as well as interdepartmental teams and initiatives
  • Work closely with supervisors and OVPRP team members to ensure a cohesive message, Marketing and Communications strategy across OVPRP and affiliated centers and institutes

  • None

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to engage in repetitive motions, communicate effectively, hear, see, including color, depth perception and clarity.

Department Preferences:

  • Experience with science or technical writing
  • Experience with media relations
  • Experience with web design
  • Experience producing and editing photos and video content
  • Knowledge of ADA compliance and captioning requirements for video and multimedia
  • Experience with Adobe CQ5 CMS, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, Facebook Business Suite, Twitter Ads Manager, and LinkedIn Advertising Campaign Manager.
  • Proficient in the Adobe Suite, ex. Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.
  • Experience producing and editing photos and video content.
