The Report Writer works in support of Campus Operations teams to develop and support organization-wide data delivery. This position is responsible for end-to-end report development including interaction with end users to gather requirements, understanding report objectives, defining, designing, and developing reports and documentation using the available tools and delivering reports to end users. Must be able to retrieve data from databases and use available tools to analyze the data and build reports from the data and dashboards.

The Report Writer will promote the use of data analytics and reporting to end users. The Report Writer will facilitate the review of requests for information and help ensure the most effective development of new reporting tools and reports.

Essential Duties:

  • Create and produce recurring reports in support of Finance, Facilities Management, Housing Operations, and other teams within Campus Operations.
  • Provide analytical support, analytical data structure and reporting.
  • Collaborate with end users to design and build reports in a timely and professional manner and make corrective configuration or enhancements.
  • Participate in design and validation sessions and ensure appropriate documentation, follow-up and issue escalation occurs.
  • Provide technical consultation including application configuration. Review, analyze, and evaluate system needs to develop recommendations for customers.
  • Develop, support and maintain all required system design, and build system documentation.
  • Translate business requirements into functional specifications and manages changes to specifications. Prioritize, coordinate, and implement updates and requested changes to the system; review and test each new release; troubleshoot problems and questions from end users.
  • Develop strong relationships with end user communities, customers and business partners. Assists end users with problem resolution, training, and functional support.
  • Develop complex scripts, views, and stored procedures, developing reports in applicable systems.
  • Automate or increase efficiency of existing reports
  • Initiates queries and report writing; presents findings in applicable programs.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert across the organization and assist users with reporting and analysis activities and tools, including ad hoc reporting
  • Supports user training, testing, documentation, and roll-out of reports and end-user reporting tools
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position
 

Job Requirements

Required Education:   Bachelors degree, AND: 

  • 24 months of computer programming and analysis, including experience with enterprise reporting and analytics tools. 
Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.

  • Able to communicate, integrate, and prioritize requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple, parallel activities and organize time and resources.
  • Independently learns appropriate techniques to apply and adapt new ideas in related, different or changing situations.
  • Critical thinking skills that include the ability to analyze end user requirements and translate into key data points to be used across the business.
  • Ability to write, edit, and optimize queries.
  • High expertise in at least one software/system design application.
  • Knowledge and experience with Report Writing tools and support programs/systems such as Crystal reports, Microsoft Access, SSRS, OLAP or similar.
  • Understanding of a wide range of interpretive analysis tools (e.g. trend analysis, spreadsheets, comparisons, graphs, summary versus detail charts, drill down, correlations, exception analysis).
 Department Preference
  • Working knowledge of University enterprise systems
  • 3+ years experience with SQL, Crystal Reports, Access, and/or SSRS
  • Experience writing, debugging, and documenting complex queries against relational databases.
  • 12+ months professional accounting or finance experience
