Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in aerosol science? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? 

This position forms part of the LUMOS research group – a unique collaboration between the University of Leeds and the Met Office. The postholder will join CEMAC, working closely with software development scientists in support and evaluation of aerosol modelling tools and datasets. 

LUMOS is made up of several research posts, all held in Leeds, and each of which is jointly supported by the University and the Met Office. The LUMOS pursues a programme of research aimed at delivering socio-economic impact from the wider research programme of the University of Leeds, specifically through:

•    Providing a joint research unit (JRU) with the capability to conduct and support “end-to-end” research, from fundamental physical science and modelling through to impacts modelling and socio-economic applications; and

•    Having a formal connection with the Met Office (the UK’s mandated provider of guidance on weather, atmospheric natural hazards and climate change) embedded in the unit, and in the roles and management of every member of that unit.

More specifically, the objective of LUMOS is to provide capability for end-to-end research into the development and use of Met Office atmospheric models and data for socio-economic impact. LUMOS meets this aim, and contributes to delivering modelling tools that are fit for purpose in weather and climate service applications by:

•    Conducting and exploiting targeted fundamental research on weather and climate processes;

•    Building and evaluating state-of-the-art models for the next generation of prediction systems;

•    Accelerating the realisation of socio-economic impact of the research in terms of improved weather and climate models and services, through applied social science research.

The JRU delivers to the strategic plans of both organisations by:

•    Maximising economic and societal impact by integrating the delivery of high-priority collaborative research activities with direct operational benefits;

•    Ensuring that the partnership is well placed to win research income from large strategic programmes and international and commercial clients of the Met Office fitting the identified research strengths;

•    Providing a building block for future growth of our academic partnership that is adaptable to a changing funding environment;

•    Creating interdisciplinary science teams and developing interdisciplinary individuals by encouraging increased research and educational interactions in a wider range of science areas, Schools and Faculties in Leeds and with the Met Office.
