Job Description

Are you an early career researcher looking for a challenge?   Do you have a background in Biology and Biochemistry?  Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

Invasive fungal infections (e.g., Aspergillosis and candidiasis) are a significant cause of mortality in hospital patients, especially when immunocompromised. Their diagnostic relies on the detection of beta‐D‐1,3‐glucans (BDG) by the Fungitell assay which uses horseshoe crab extracts (endangered species) as main reagent. At Leeds, specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were developed to detect BDG in plant cell walls. The current project will validate the use of these probes in the detection of Aspergillus using platforms compatible with most hospital settings. As a research technician, you will analyse samples with combination of MAbs to develop a suitable test. You will also visit the hospitals to collect samples, learn handling protocols, and for short‐term shadowing to familiarize with the infrastructure available to carry‐ out the tests.

For this role, you should have a Degree, BTEC higher level or equivalent or equivalent experience. You should also have knowledge in biochemistry applied to antibody-antigen interactions (this can include a period in Further or Higher Education).

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies.
