Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

The Medium Energy Group in the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for two postdoctoral positions in experimental hadronic physics. We will consider applicants with a background in experimental medium or high-energy nuclear and particle physics. The appointment will be for two years, with the option to extend for a third year, contingent on funding and performance. Applications received before Dec. 31, 2022, will receive full consideration.

The Medium Energy Group consists of ten staff members, two engineers, and several postdocs and students. Our team has a broad-ranging program in hadron and nuclear physics, leading electron-scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, B, and C, including CLAS12 and SoLID. We have led SeaQuest and are also involved in SpinQuest at Fermilab, the MUSE experiment at PSI, the NEXT 0νββ experiment, and several smaller in-house experiments. Our Group also has a comprehensive program in detector technology, including pixelized MCP-PMTs, imaging calorimetry based on CMOS sensors, superconducting nanowire detectors, and the development of polarized light-ion beams beyond 3He.

Furthermore, we are investing in the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), leveraging resources from Argonne Strategic LDRD and Program Development funds. We are active members of the EPIC collaboration. Our current focus lies in developing a hybrid imaging calorimeter for the barrel region, designing a forward-looking simulation and reconstruction software toolkit, and development of the physics program for the EIC. Here, we can leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques deployed on Argonne's world-class high-performance computing facilities. The Argonne EIC group is a multidisciplinary team, a close collaboration between members of the Medium-Energy, Theory, and Accelerator R&D groups, together with the High Energy Physics and Material Science Divisions.
