RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary focus of this search is to increase the capacity of the Education Specialist Program (SPED) to support our goals to deliver a student-centered, inquiry-based preparation program that meets the needs of the increasingly diverse backgrounds of our teacher candidates and the student population in the East Bay community.

This individual will take on all responsibilities as a full-time adjunct faculty position including teaching 5-7 courses and department service. All full-time adjunct faculty positions are expected to have 21-22 units. The individual may receive reassigned time of 3 units (1 course) for SPED program leadership.

Responsibilities will include teaching courses related to effective instruction of diverse exceptional learners, assessment, case management and collaboration. Other responsibilities could also include program leadership roles in SPED, depending on experience. Service could include working closely with the SPED program and the chair to schedule classes (as well as interact with students, etc.). In addition, you will be involved in the department's grant initiatives.

SUMMARY: Annual workload 21-22 total units divided between teaching and service with at least 15 units of teaching across the academic year.

PROGRAM AND INSTITUTION DESCRIPTION:

The Education Specialist program in the Teacher Education department at Saint Mary's College of California is dedicated to enacting the Lasallian principles within the field of special education. These principles emphasize social justice, inclusion, dignity for all, holistic spirituality, and a quality education that challenges our candidates to think critically. We are in search of a candidate who embodies these values within their scholarship, teaching, and service.

We encourage applicants who come from historically marginalized groups and/or have experience working with exceptional learners across diverse identity groups. We are searching for an energetic, experienced and highly organized professional to work with candidates in our undergraduate and graduate programs in special education.

Qualifications:

* A Masters or Doctorate in special education or closely related field no later than August 2022 and a SPED teaching credential.

* Evidence of expertise in academic assessment, curriculum, and instructional interventions for children and youth with high incidence disabilities especially autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities or early childhood special education;

* Experience in the following areas (1) university level teaching in SPED teacher preparation classes (2) working with K-12 special education settings (3) new teacher support, (4) A minimum of three years teaching experience in public school K-12 settings with students with mild/ moderate disabilities is required.

Candidates who have experience with mentoring teacher candidates from diverse, historically marginalized backgrounds who are first-generation college students are encouraged to apply. In addition, bilingual Spanish candidates are encouraged to apply as well as candidates with experience in teacher residencies, professional development schools, site-based courses, school-university partnerships and/or clinical supervision.

We recognize the vital role of first-hand experience, pedagogical innovation, and scholarly work in supporting teacher candidates to enact transformative and humanizing learning experiences. Such candidates for this position will provide mentorship to and enrich the learning of students from diverse backgrounds and intersectional identities.
