Assistant/Associate Professor of Music Composition; Director of Music Composition

The George Mason University Dewberry School of Music as one of the most diverse institutions in American higher education, seeks a dynamic Assistant or Associate Professor to serve as Director of Music Composition starting August 2023. This is a full -time tenure track 9-month instructional position. Salary is commensurate with experience. Full benefits package provided.

The Dewberry School of Music comprises undergraduate students studying performance, music technology, music education, composition, and jazz studies, as well as graduate students in performance, composition, conducting, music education, jazz studies, pedagogy, and collaborative piano.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach Applied Composition, Orchestration, Composition and Arranging, and/or courses aligned with the candidate’s area(s) of research/creative specialty, which may include Music Technology, Music Theory, or Music Business.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to implementing the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of the candidate’s areas of practice, and will collaborate with the faculty in developing music curriculum relevant to the needs of twenty-first century musicians. Other responsibilities include working in partnership with faculty colleagues to recruit and retain composition students at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level. The successful candidate will engage in the academic and artistic life of the Dewberry School, the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), and the University.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s in music composition required;
Evidence of successful publication and performance of original compositions in a variety of musical settings;
Successful university teaching experience in applied music composition;
Ability to teach diverse areas of composition, including electronic composition for music technology majors;
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in teaching; and
Ability to mentor graduate student research in composition.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in music composition;
Ability to direct/coach contemporary music ensemble;
Innovative approach to pedagogy and curriculum;
Experience teaching and recruiting graduate and undergraduate applied composition students;
An ongoing commitment to scholarly/creative activity in composition, as demonstrated through performance and publication of original compositions, research, national/international presentations, and/or other such activities; and
Experience in composing with industry-standard DAW software such as Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools, Max/MSP, or similar software.
