College/Department Information
Established in the summer of 2002, the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CBGM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) was developed to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine with the ultimate goal of promoting predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (4P) medicine. The Center's research efforts focus on two main areas: 1) discovery and validation of biomarkers for disease prediction and diagnosis, 2) pharmacomics and drug discovery for personalized medicine. CBGM is home of four internationally renowned programs in diabetes research: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY), the Prospective Assessment in Newborns of Diabetes Autoimmunity (PANDA), the Diabetic Complications Consortium (DiaComp) and the Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Consortium (MMPC). Additional research programs include autoimmune diseases, transplantation, and cancer. These research programs are supported by an annual extramural funding of approximately $12 million. The center houses several state-of-the-art high throughput and high content facilities for genetics, genomics, proteomics, drug screening and bioinformatics. The center continues to recruit independent investigators with expertise in diverse disciplines such as genomics, proteomics, immunology, medicinal chemistry, drug development, biostatistics and computational biology. This multidisciplinary approach provides an avenue for investigators to interact and stimulate novel ideas.
The TEDDY study - The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young - is looking for the causes of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). T1DM used to be called childhood diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes.

Job Summary
Atlanta Based - Phlebotomy and laboratory support for the TEDDY study research clinic in Atlanta, Georgia. Requires candidate technically skilled in pediatric phlebotomy with an awareness of the developmental and psychosocial challenges associated with children of all ages.

Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:

Phlebotomist: Draw blood on TEDDY in the TEDDY office. Must be familiar with the collection protocol of each study, and prepare for each scheduled visit accordingly. Maintain a complimentary schedule with all phlebotomy staff to ensure all study visits are staffed (i.e. Regular office visits, late days and weekends). Prepare sample collection kits as needed for TEDDY subjects. Train families as needed on the collection and return of morning cortisol samples. Conduct/assist with the conduct of Oral Glucose Tolerance Test visits.

Shipping: Maintain Sample logs for all TEDDY samples collected in Atlanta. Check and correct all errors in the electronic shipping files of each sample. Check and correct the position of each sample in each sample box before shipping. Ensure that each electronic sample position coincides with the sample position in each box. Correct source documents as needed to coincide with corrected shipping files. Prepare each sample container for shipping according to study protocol. Ship samples each week to their corresponding lab according to the study protocol schedule. Maintain electronic shipping files for all samples shipped from Atlanta. Maintain Shipping date log for all samples shipped from Atlanta. Correct/Resolve any shipping errors/issues from the Data Coordinating Center. Monitor and maintain shipping supplies (i.e. boxes, bio-bags, shippers and dry ice).

Other: Perform other related duties as assigned.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Part-Time (0.49 FTE); Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)

Pay Grade: 11

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position

Participation in the Georgia Defined Contribution Plan is mandatory for part-time and temporary employees. The Georgia Defined Contribution Plan is a retirement plan for part-time employees who work less than 50% and for temporary employees. Members contribute 7 1/2% of gross salary to the plan.
