The Augusta University Libraries is seeking a Librarian Assistant or Associate Professor- Special Collections to create, develop and enhance our programs that encourage the use of primary resources in teaching and scholarship. Reporting to the Director of Collections and Resource Strategies, the selected candidate is charged with developing an intentional and strategic enhancement of existing special collections and scholarship, working with two distinctive collections housed at the Reese Library and Historical Collections and Archives at the Greenblatt Library. The selected candidate will oversee two staff members with responsibilities for processing collections and providing services, programming, and outreach to the university and metropolitan communities. This is a non-tenure track position.

Existing collections at the Greenblatt Library have known strengths in the history of the health sciences, manuscripts, archives and historical materials of the Medical College of Georgia, the 19th century rare book library of MCG, and significant holdings of British and American medical literature. The Reese library holds records about the history of Augusta University and the Augusta Arsenal, the University System of Georgia and the local area, including collections about the 1970 riots, oral histories and unprocessed Pilgrim Papers. Collections also include a partnership with the Augusta Historical Society, Center for the Study of Georgia History, and Guard House Museum. A successful candidate will be creative, collaborative, compassionate, and have a demonstrated commitment to an inclusive and strategic approach to developing a Special Collections program ‘like no other.'


Responsibilities
  • Operational and programmatic responsibilities for the Reese Library Special Collections and Greenblatt Library Historical Collections and Archives.
  • Development of a suite of robust services that meet and exceed the teaching and research needs of the Summerville and Health Sciences Campus communities.
  • Provide support, services, and research assistance for visiting scholars.
  • Identification, development, and enhancement of collection areas of strength to support current and future teaching and research needs.
  • Collaboration and partnerships with cultural institutions at the regional and state levels to enhance and promote usage of AU Libraries' distinctive collections and archives.
  • Active partnership with Library Development Director and other campus stakeholders to enhance existing collections through gifts and endowments.
  • Development of successful programs that engage the campus and metropolitan communities.
  • Enhancement of digitization and exhibition programs of primary resources at the AU Libraries.

    Required Qualifications
    American Library Association Accredited Master's degree in Library Science, Archives, Museum Studies or Public Administration

    Experience working in special collections and/or archives. Demonstrated knowledge of archival practices, Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), 2nd edition, and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
  • 4 years of relevant experience in a Special Collections or Archives
  • Demonstrated success in inclusive and diverse approaches to the discovery, promotion and use of primary resources
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, evaluating, and mentoring employees
  • Demonstrated success in fostering and developing collaborations and partnerships with partners outside of the organization
  • Demonstrated success at program creation and development with special collections materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively both orally and through writing
  • Knowledge of digitization programs and development
  • Knowledge of grant writing

    Assistant Professor - Early level career as a faculty member with 3-5 years of experience

    Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

    Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of successful grant application and administration
  • Knowledge of exhibition programs
  • Knowledge of preservation programs

    Shift/Salary/Benefits
    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

    Salary: 71,000 - 95,000 annually. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
