The Medical College of Georgia's Emergency Medicine department is hiring two faculty members at the Instructor- Limited Term level. These positions are non-ACGME fellowship positions in Wilderness Emergency Medicine. The positions will be half-time clinical faculty working and teaching residents, fellows, and medical students in the Emergency Department. The other half of these positions will be spent in training in Wilderness Emergency Medicine.


Responsibilities
Wilderness Medicine Fellowship

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Work 9 clinical shifts per month; teaching residents and students while working clinically

    Academic Responsibilities
  • Successful completion of classroom & didactic components of the fellowship
  • Planning seminars/ lectures (American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid, MedWAR, Advanced Wilderness Life Support)
  • Membership and active participation in the Wilderness Medical Society with professional meeting attendance (National or International)
  • Membership and active participation in the Wilderness Section of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Society with professional meeting attendance
  • Concurrent advancement toward becoming a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM)
  • Research involving submission of a paper to a peer reviewed journal or other scholarly activity
  • Advancement towards completion of DiMM (Diploma in Mountain Medicine) encompassing technical skills in wilderness and austere mountain medicine
  • Achieve Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS) certification, with the opportunity to become an instructor.
  • Achieve Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) certification, with the opportunity to become an instructor
  • Work with other fellowship specialties, both locally and/or internationally to help bridge gaps between niches and expand educational experiences, to include but not limited to International Medicine, Pediatric EM, Ultrasound, Critical Care and EMS and Event Medicine
  • Active leadership and involvement with the MCG Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WMIG)
  • Active involvement with the EMED-5086 Introduction to Wilderness Medicine course for the PGY-1 MCG students
  • Successful participation in special opportunities in wilderness medicine (tactical medicine, Search and Rescue, EMS management, ski patrol, park medic program, international work, race medicine, hyperbaric & dive medicine, tropical medicine, etc.) based on the specific area of interest of the fellow with agreement and supervision of the fellowship director.
  • Successfully plan and execute the final fellowship activity: The Capstone Experience in which you are the medical leader and have done pre-planning, management of an expedition that showcases leadership as well as wilderness medicine skills in a full capacity

    Required Qualifications
    MD/DO; eligible for icense in Georgia; Emergency Medicine residency trained or Pediatric EM fellowship trained

    Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

    Shift/Salary/Benefits
    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

    Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
