The Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. Our university launched a new initiative to recruit up to 20 new faculty in the fields of inflammaging and brain aging to perform research to improve outcomes for those suffering from cerebral vascular aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Thus, we specifically seek an individual with a record of outstanding research accomplishments, proven ability to secure sustained extramural funding and demonstrated leadership in the fields of cerebral vascular aging and cognitive impairment.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and growing department focusing on various research questions of cellular signaling, neural regulation and hormonal control in a broad range of whole animal, organ and cellular model systems of cardiovascular, endocrine and renal disease.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive start-up package and will be assigned lab and office space in state-of-the-art research facilities. lines.

Responsibilities
  • Establish vigorous independent research programs that are extramurally funded to complement the research strengths and goals of the department and the university. Faculty hires part of the Transdisciplinary Research Initiative in Inflammaging and Brain Aging (TRIBA) will collaborate and participate in joint grant submissions and include other AU investigators.
  • Teach in the School of Medicine and/or The Graduate School and mentor graduate and medical students, as well. Faculty hires part of the Transdisciplinary Research Initiative in Inflammaging and Brain Aging (TRIBA) are expected to collaborate with other TRIBA recruits and host educational events such as journal clubs, seminars, and other interactive meetings.
  • Provide national, local, and institutional service.

    Required Qualifications
    All Medical College of Georgia faculty should be Board Eligible - Board Certified and have a MD, PhD, or equivalent appropriate degree commensurate with role.

    Minimum qualifications for each rank are provided below:

    Assistant Professor - Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

    Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

    Professor - Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

    To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have achieved tenure at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution.     Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

  • An established national and international reputation in the field;
  • Sustained success in obtaining external funding for research;
  • Exceptional track record of publications in top scientific journals;
  • Evidence of a commitment to fostering multidisciplinary collaborations with other academic researchers both inside and outside the university; and,

    Shift/Salary/Benefits
    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

    Assistant Professor - Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

    The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. The department has a proud tradition in developing novel treatments for stroke. Research activities in the department include both basic science and clinical and translational investigations. Additionally, our multidisciplinary Neuroscience Center of Excellence facilitates active collaborations with subspecialists from other departments including general neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuro-otology, neuro-ophthalmology, functional neurosurgery (deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery), neuro-gastroenterology and basic science. Our activities have spanned the phases of clinical trial activities from a strong pre-clinical “translational” program that has developed the scientific rationale and premise for clinical trials, to phase I and II trials that have established dosing, safety and pharmacokinetics, and finally to phase III trials designed and initiated to establish efficacy. Augusta University houses a wide variety of other specialties including a level I trauma center, and seven ICUs (neurology, shock trauma, surgery, pediatric, neonatal, cardiology, and medical).
