JOB SUMMARY:
This position will join our wastewater-based epidemiology team to assist in the tracking of pathogens in wastewater. This field of science is quickly evolving and has proven valuable for monitoring populations for infectious diseases and providing timely data for making informed decisions to advance public health. In 2020, our team began tracking the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causative agent of COVID-19, in wastewater throughout the State of Wisconsin. We established one of the largest monitoring programs in the country and have been viewed as leaders in this field. We are currently looking for a Microbiologist that can assist in the advancement of this program by expanding the pathogens and antibiotic resistant genes that can be monitored in wastewater.
The Microbiologist will assist in designing and refining dPCR, qPCR and/or sequencing methods for additional targets, develop QA/QC for new analyses, as well as assist in writing publications. The position can be hired as a Microbiologist I or Microbiologist II depending on level of education and experience. This is an exciting opportunity to further the public health in Wisconsin thru the continued development of a robust wastewater surveillance program in the state of Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is the state's public, environmental and occupational health laboratory. Founded in 1903, WSLH has a rich history in protecting and advancing the public health of Wisconsin's people and environment while also embodying the Wisconsin Idea. WSLH is part of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This position resides within the Environmental Health Division of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) located at 2601 Agriculture Drive, Madison, WI 53718. Primary work hours are generally 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday but start and end times can be flexible.

EDUCATION:
Required
Bachelor's Degree

QUALIFICATIONS:
Microbiologist I: Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science or related field required. One year of laboratory experience preferred.
Microbiologist II: Bachelor's Degree required (advanced degree preferred) in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science or related field. Three years laboratory experience or advanced degree with molecular techniques experience required.

WORK TYPE:
Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

APPOINTMENT TYPE, DURATION:
Terminal, 18 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

SALARY:
Minimum $46,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Minimum annual salary for Microbiologist I: $46,000/year
Minimum annual salary for Microbiologist II: $54,000/year
