Summary

The lab is studying the role of allorecognition in development and in sociality in the soil amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, a solitary, non-pathogenic protist that exhibits cooperative multicellular development upon starvation. The lab is looking for technician to assist a graduate student and a faculty member in conducting basic laboratory tasks,that includes molecular biology and cell culture. The job requires the use of basic laboratory skills, and technical and academic knowledge to follow established procedures and record results. A vibrant person willing to learn new experimental and intellectual skills and to work collaboratively with a small group of dedicated scientists. Position is dependent on funding, expected to end June 2023.

Job Duties

  • Prepares and conducts laboratory research experiments that includes PCR, gel electrophoresis.
  • Prepares and analyses plasmid DNA and genomic DNA. Transforms D. discoideum amoebae and E. coli bacteria.
  • Works on light and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Collects and analyzes data on the growth and development of D. discoideum amoebae in pure populations and in chimerae between different strains.
  • Prepares growth media, plates, and buffers.
  • Maintains laboratory stocks, orders, and cleanliness.
  • Participates in weekly laboratory meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.
