--- Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC) seeks to recruit a software developer. This position will serve as the institute’s software developer to design, maintain, enhance and upgrade existing/new software. Perform data analysis, data pre-processing, and develop prototype analytic, machine learning, and visual analytics tools. This position will work closely with the Director and the Research Associate.
Typical Functions May Include:
- Software Development. Design and develop software applications, algorithms. Produce and maintain clean production-level code.
- Software Deployment and Maintenance. Provide support for continuous maintenance of the developed software web applications.
- Code reviews. Provide code reviews to new undergraduate/graduate students. Be able to identify anti-patterns, performance issues, or lack of supported styles.
- Data Collection. Collects various forms of data pertaining to research in data science and data-enabled research.
- Record Keeping. Constructs and maintains data analysis pipelines for a variety of data formats by keeping records of information obtained during research. May include but not limited to a database of information, hard files, etc.
- Technical Research. Independently conducts technical research and develops prototype analytic, machine learning, and visual analytics tools.
- Data Analysis. Conducts analyses of data and directs the analysis of data.
- Report Preparation. Prepares final versions of reports to be submitted and contributes to the writing, editing, and formatting of academic papers for top-tier conferences and journals.
- Collaboration. Collaborates with other researchers across the campus and mentor undergraduate students.
- As Needed. Performs various duties and assist with other projects as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
Job Requirements
--- Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree.
Skills:
- Willing to learn and implement concepts in data science, machine learning (ML), analytics, visualization, and artificial intelligence (AI).
- The position will require attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, effective problem-solving skills, and excellent judgment.
- Ability to work independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member without daily supervision, and effectively communicate with diverse groups of clients.
- Applicant must have a dynamic skill set, be willing to work with new technologies, be highly organized, and capable of planning and coordinating multiple tasks.
- Able to work under deadlines and accept supervision.

Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Ability to engage in repetitive motions. Sit for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity.
- Standard office work environment.
Departmental Preferences:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Engineering, Statistics or similar field.
- Experience with full stack web application design, development, and maintenance.
- Experience in using git/version control.
- Demonstrated experience developing websites using HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, REACT JS.
