Overview

Saint Mary's seeks an innovative musical director for the production practicum course, Perfa 132, Play in Production: Musical Director, in Spring 2023.

Seeking a Musical Director for our spring ‘23 theatre production. Our original pastiche is entitled Willow and Houston Throw the Grad Party of the F*cking Century, and it combines original student writing with songs, monologues, and scenes from contemporary theatrical works.

Working list of songs (songs may be cut, but will not be added):

“Tonight Belongs to You” from The Prom

“Times are Hard for Dreamers” from Amelie

“Totally Fucked” from Spring Awakening

“After All of This and Everything” from Freaky Friday

“Calm” from Ordinary Days

“You Learn” from Jagged Little Pill

The Musical Director will be asked to lead vocal rehearsals for our production 1-2 nights a week, for 3 hours a night. Rehearsals are Sunday-Thursday, 6:00-10:00 pm. Important dates in the production calendar are as follows:

Auditions: February 7-10: 6:00-10:00 pm, plus casting discussion via Zoom on February 11

Rehearsals: 1-2 nights per week from February 12- March 30: 6:00-10:00 pm

Brush up rehearsal: April 11, 6:00-10:00 pm

Tech: April 12-15: 6:00-10:00 pm

Dress Rehearsals: April 17-19: 6:00-10:00 pm

The MD's presence is not required for performances.

Therefore, the MD is asked to attend roughly 20-24 rehearsals. The MD is also asked to attend production meetings via Zoom every-other week. Pre-recorded music tracks will be utilized for performances, but some piano accompaniment may be required for auditions and rehearsals.

Compensation will include 0.66 academic credits' worth of faculty salary, plus a $2,000 stipend.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Proven success as a Musical Director (not Assistant MD) for at least 3 musical theatre productions. Experience with vocal coaching, both ensemble and solos/small groups. Skill in piano accompaniment. Skill in assessing vocal ranges and vocal ability. Ability to collaborate and communicate with members of a theatrical production team.
