Summary

The core facility is part of BCM Advanced Technology Cores and is located at the Neurological Research Institute of the Texas Children's Hospital, a multidisciplinary and extremely dynamic research environment with state-of-art infrastructure. A long-term Research Technician position is available within the Human Stem Cell and Neuronal Differentiation Core at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. The technician has a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in basic or medical science, experience in cell culture, preferably with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells, and basic molecular biology techniques. The lab is seeking a motivated individual to conduct day-to-day research in a highly collaborative team supporting a variety of projects using human models of disease. The technician will be responsible for maintaining Human Stem Cell and Neuronal Differentiation Core activities by ordering, preparing, and distributing reagents and materials required to support ongoing studies. The lab is utilizing patient specific stem cells and experiments will include methods from molecular and cell biology, genomics, and physiology. Work involves multiple investigators and daily interactions with users of the Core. Flexibility and adaptability in work schedule and carrying out job duties are utterly important for stem cell related work that frequently demands weekend engagement to feed cells. Technician has excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Job Duties

  • Assists in planning and completes experimental procedures while keeping rigorous day-to-day documentation of performed work.
  • Maintains laboratory environment and helps with supply orders.
  • Maintains Human Stem Cell and Neuronal Differentiation Core activities by ordering, preparing, and distributing reagents and materials required to support ongoing studies.
  • Utilizes patient specific stem cells and experiments that includes methods from molecular and cell biology, genomics, and physiology.
  • Performs culture, expands, and cryo-preserve iPSCs and their progeny. 
  • Prepares, conducts, and troubleshoots research experiments such as basic molecular cloning, Western blotting, PCR, RT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, etc. 
  • Documents, analyzes, and presents results.
  • Assists in the preparation of laboratory services and reports.
  • Performs core service projects for BCM Faculty researchers that includes planning and completes research experiments that includes cell cultures and performs routine biochemical, genetic, and molecular biology techniques (Western blotting, qPCR, and DNA cloning).
  • Handles and processes biological specimen (blood, skin biopsies).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in basic or medical science, experience in cell culture, preferably with embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells, and basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with iPSC cell culture models.
  • Has excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
