Summary

We are looking for a motivated candidate to work in the capacity of a Research Assistant in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. 

 

The prospective candidate will be working in a new laboratory headed by a pediatric surgeon-scientist recently funded by the NIH. The laboratory is interested in better understanding the molecular basis for intestinal dysfunction in pediatric gastrointestinal diseases with an emphasis on neurointestinal diseases. This position is best suited for someone with a Bachelor’s degree and prior research experience who is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. 

 

This is a temporary position.

Job Duties

  • Design and perform daily laboratory experiments in coordination with the principal investigator and other laboratory personnel. 
  • Isolate and maintain cell culture including preparation of media and reagents.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of work and appropriate databases. 
  • Collect and process tissue samples as instructed. 
  • Participate in the writing/presentation of research papers and abstracts.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and equipment including in vitro applied tension systems, genome sequencing in collaboration with core facilities, and advanced imaging techniques in collaboration with other laboratories/collaborators. 
  • DNA/RNA isolation and PCR techniques.
  • Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescent chemistry.
  • Light and fluorescent microscopy.
  • Basic statistical/graphical analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
