Summary

The College of Engineering (CoE) Facilities Director is responsible for the leadership of the Facilities Management Office (FMO) within the Resource Planning and Management Office (RPM). FMO oversees roughly 1,500,000 square feet of building area spread over thirty buildings on the North Campus of UM and coordinates activities for fifteen CoE academic departments, and other CoE units and research centers. This position reports directly to the Senior Executive Director of Administration and Chief Financial Officer and interacts directly with other senior leadership at Michigan Engineering.

Responsibilities*

Leadership of the FMO staff and management of the office and its budget
Planning and management of capital improvement initiatives and projects for CoE which range from modest renovations to the design and construction of major new facilities. Supervise an annual average of 30 separate projects that can range from $5,000 to $150,000,000.Liaison between CoE and UM entities (AEC and Construction Services)
Partnership with UM central service providers such as EHS, DPSS, Plant Operations, Grounds and Custodial Services, and Transportation Services to ensure CoE buildings and facilities are safe, clean, and well maintained
Maintaining safety and security by leading the CoE Emergency Preparedness and Response Team (EPART), being a lead member of CoE’s laboratory safety committee (CoESafe), directing the efforts of the CoE Emergency Response Team (CoERT), and coordinating CoE wide drills, training, and emergency response
Leadership in the stewardship of CoE resources and management as related to sustainability and energy conservation
Responsibility for the CoE space inventory and providing recommendations to leadership on space allocation related issues
Assisting the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and the RPM Sr. Executive Director in master planning efforts for CoE
Successful candidates for the CoE Facilities Director role will possess strong leadership skills, including the ability to:

Provide leadership in meeting expectations for exemplary customer service, and focus efforts on fulfilling customer expectations by seeking insight into customer needs
Convert vision and strategy into action and align FMO operations with CoE objections
Foster a positive environment that promotes staff engagement and recognizes their contributions
Demonstrate and encourage a healthy balance of work and personal life
Champion the CoE goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Exemplary project management skills
Physical Demands/Work Environment

Requires the ability to travel to various locations on UM Campus to conduct work
This position requires inspection of CoE buildings and renovation sites to detect safety concerns, condition of existing space, and adherance to standards during construction activities
Occasionally ascends/descends ladders
Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management
A minimum of seven years of progressive responsibilities including management of an office in a decentralized environment
Experience in managing technical operations, including, but not limited to, construction/renovation projects, space and master planning, maintenance and plant operations, etc
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present data, problem solutions, and improvement ideas to a diverse audience
Experience in emergency management and crisis response
Demonstrated ability to meet assigned operational goals that include financial stewardship and operational performance in an academic higher education/research environment
Desired Qualifications*

Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, or construction management
