Job Overview

Hoxworth Blood Center (HBC) is located within the College of Medicine and is the only Regional Blood Center owned and operated by a University in United States.

Under general supervision from the Chief Production Officer, the Division Director, Laboratories, Hoxworth Blood Center, will provide strategic vision and leadership to help manage, grow, and execute donor center laboratory operations in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards. Direct donor center operations related to Laboratory departments: Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Quality Control Laboratory, Component Manufacturing Laboratory, and Product Management/Distribution.
Essential Functions
Develop policies and implement procedures to enforce strategic planning initiatives; develop new activities and goals to support the Laboratory departments.
Direct the management of the department budgets in Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Quality Control Laboratory, Component Manufacturing Laboratory, and Product Management/Distribution; establish guidelines for processing fees and charges; recommend and approve purchases.
Ensure departmental processes, procedures, and services are compliant with accreditation and regulatory standards.
Direct the development and management of training and education of all employees in the departments.
Ensure departments remain current with new innovations, technology, equipment, software, and services.
Ensure all department related contracts are current and contractual benefits are optimized in the department.
Direct the development and implementation of interdepartmental activities amongst the Managers and staff in Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Quality Control Laboratory, Component Manufacturing Laboratory, and Product Management/Distribution.
Establish, set, and meet year to year strategic goals for Laboratories in coordination with Chief Blood Operations Officer.
Establish, set, and meet year to year strategic goals related to organizational collection and manufacturing goals, discard rates, blood import and export goals, and fractionated plasma commitment levels.
Support Hoxworth Blood Center’s safety, cGMP, and Quality Plan in coordination with the Division Director, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
Determine necessity to collaborate with other departmental Division Directors, Senior Management Team, and/or organizational Cabinet members.
Support and promote all aspects of our commitment to inclusion and core values.
Serve on Hoxworth Blood Center Senior Management Team and blood banking industry organizations and committees.
Provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education
Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare and/or Biological Sciences field.
Required Trainings/Certifications
MT/MLS (ASCP) certification.
Required Experience
Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training in the field of blood banking, biotherapies, transfusion medicine, or scientific research.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Five (5) years of direct supervisory experience managing employees, teams, and assets.
Customer service experience highly desired.
Sufficient understanding of regulatory aspects in blood banking, biotherapies, and customer service.
Master’s Degree is ideal but not required.
SBB(ASCP) certification preferred. CQA/ASQ certification desired.
