Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Housekeeping unit is a part of the Office of Facilities, Physical Plant, Business Affairs Section of the University. The unit provides special floor care to all academic buildings, administration offices, labs, and University Union and University Union Annex. Work involves this performance on a continuing basis of a variety of tasks in accordance with established floor maintenance practices. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment used for floor maintenance.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Floor Maintenance Technician performs skilled work in the care and maintenance of various types of hard surfaces and carpets (stripping, waxing, buffing, shampooing, extraction, and bonneting) in areas that include the academic buildings, administration offices, labs, University Union, and University Center. Knowledgeable of established floor finishing techniques, procedures, and the correct usage of chemical cleaning agents. Ability to operate, clean, and maintain commercial floor machinery, keeping them functioning correctly and efficiently. Secure the work area and post proper safety notifications. Duties include physically strenuous activities such as moving furniture and operating heavy cleaning equipment. Provide back-up support for special projects and other activities, as needed, with specific instructions given as required for executive of more complex tasks.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of floor care and cleaning. Skill in the use and proper care of floor maintenance equipment and the ability to train on new equipment and safety practices. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to use manipulative skills. Physical strength to work at heavy manual labor for considerable periods of time.
Required Certifications or licensure
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
