College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary
This position requires the daily performance of complex chemical, biological and animal tissue preparation in the setting of a basic science research lab. In addition, the position will conduct the experiments and record the experimental results in the lab. The position will develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures and functions independently on small less complex projects. Depending on particular experiments, some work may be required in different core facilities and may require weekend work. Proficiency in mouse and rat surgery and all aspects of animal handling and husbandry is essential.

Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:

Lab Operations: Coordinates telemetry studies for other faculty and labs. Operates computer based data acquisition systems, chart recorders and signal amplification equipment. Calibrates, troubleshoots and makes minor repairs on laboratory equipment.

Animal Management: Prepares laboratory animals for surgery, performs surgical procedures as instructed, and assists with feeding, watering and general care of animals (both pre- and post-operative). Coordinates administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintains records related to use as directed.

Experiments: Performs data analysis related to producing research results and preparing findings. Assists PI in design of experimental protocols. Participates in preparation of media, stains and reagents.

Fiscal Management: Participates in the tracking and monitoring of budgetary resources to ensure effective lab operations.

Safety and Compliance: Uses independent judgment in the daily operation of the lab to ensure safe and efficient use of resources. Monitors use of resources to ensure compliance with Federal guidelines and institutional protocols.

Lab Meetings: Actively participates in lab meetings, which includes staying apprised of related scientific literature to enhance level of participation as well as promotes better research, prepares manuscripts based on conclusions drawn from research efforts, and pursues publishing as directed.

Other: Performs other duties incidental to work described herein.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.
OR
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in lab setting designing and executing research protocols, and collecting and analyzing quantitative data. Experience in working with small animals and animal surgery.
Surgical skills to include placement of osmotic mini-pump, telemetry implant, bilateral common carotid stenosis and craniotomies or willingness to learn.

Pay Grade: R9
Salary: Minimum $15.00/hour - Midpoint $17.41/hour
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
