The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.

Job Summary

 
This position requires the daily performance of a wide variety of complex chemical, biological, cytologic, and molecular procedures in a basic science research laboratory. The position requires work with small animal models (rodents), including husbandry and record keeping, surgical procedures, blood and tissue collection. In addition, the position will conduct the experiments and record the experimental results in the lab, as well as be responsible for the accuracy of results and retesting when appropriate.
Studies are approached with a translational perspective and the overall goal is to study the pathophysiological mechanisms disrupting water and ion transport in the kidney and resulting in chronic kidney disease or hypertension. Experiments include functional measures of blood pressure, urinary water and electrolyte excretion, protein and mRNA expression, hormone levels in plasma and urine, cell signaling and genetic analyses, among others. The laboratory uses patch-clamp electrophysiology, fluorescent Ca2+-imaging, confocal microscopy, biochemical, molecular biology tools and genetic approaches.

Responsibilities

 
The duties include, but are not limited to:
 
Perform research experiments under the direction of the PI, lab manager and/or postdoctoral fellow/s; record and analyze results of research experiments and procedures; prepare media, stains and reagents. Assist with taking care of rodent colony including breeding; prepare animals for surgery. Order and catalog research supplies and equipment and interface with vendors regarding issues with orders and invoicing; update chemical inventory database as needed; ensure compliance with rules and regulations related to use of biohazard materials, animals, and safety standards and advise other research staff on compliance issues; and calibrate, troubleshoot and make minor repairs on laboratory equipment as needed. Perform other duties incidental to work described herein.

Required Qualifications

 
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization supplemented by two years of college level work in the physical and/or biological sciences, and considerable experience in performing diagnostic laboratory tests and examinations in the specialized area assigned to work.
Required Experience
Some experience in a research laboratory required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

 
Knowledge, abilities, and skills needed to perform duties of the position include basic biology; a background in physics, chemistry, or biochemistry is a plus; some experience in a research laboratory; good organizational and learning skills; ability and willingness to work with animals.

Pay Grade: R7

Salary Minimum $15.00/hour - Midpoint $16.24/hour

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
