Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
With the goal of facilitating the adoption of cloud computing technologies at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, the Cloud Engineer will work with Bioinformaticians and Data Scientists in the Communicable Disease Division to plan, design, deploy, and maintain an Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure to support data storage and analysis of microbial pathogen genomic and metadata. The Cloud Engineer will consult with WSLH's Office of Information Services on networking, security, reliability, performance, monitoring, operations, processes, cost management, infrastructure as code (IaC), shared responsibility models, and well architected frameworks.

The Communicable Disease Division performs genomic sequencing on a variety of pathogens of public health concern. The Cloud Engineer will support genomic analysis workloads in the cloud and focus on the development and implementation of new resources to support pathogen genomic surveillance. Professional development and formal training opportunities are integrated into the Cloud Engineer's workload. Cloud computing and bioinformatics is evolving and growing at a rapid pace, and joining our team is an opportunity to learn new skills by working with a diverse set of technologies and data types.

Work hours are 7:45 AM- 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend/holiday work may be required in support of urgent/emergent public health needs. This position is on-site at 2601 Agriculture Dr., Madison, WI 53718. Remote work may be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager.

EDUCATION:

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Experience with infrastructure as code and/or scripting solutions like Terraform, AWS
Cloud Formation, AWS CLI
- Professional experience designing, architecting, or developing IT systems or services
- Professional experience working with customers to learn about their needs, gather requirements, recommend solutions, and assist with solution implementation

Preferred:
- Experience with source control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps and Software Development Lifecycle best practices and security
- Experience creating, maintaining, and following service and technical documentation for assigned projects and services
- Experience working with cloud data architecture services like Amazon S3, AWS Lake Formation, AWS Glue, and Amazon Athena
- Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases
- Experience with regulatory or security benchmarks like Center for Internet Security baselines and/or HIPAA, NIST 800 series regulations

SALARY:
Minimum $70,100 ANNUAL (12 months)

Technical Integration Engineer II: $70,100/year
Technical Integration Engineer III: $75,000/year
