The Ball State University Libraries is looking for a talented librarian to join our committed and highly-engaged team of professionals as Authority and Bibliographic Control Librarian. Joining colleagues in the Cataloging and Discovery Services unit, the Authority and Bibliographic Control Librarian will coordinate authority control and bibliographic enhancement/maintenance functions for records in the Libraries’ discovery system and provide original and complex copy cataloging for a variety of materials. Our Cataloging unit is recognized for taking thoughtful and inclusive approaches to description and access and is essential to connecting learners and researchers to the breadth of our collections, which includes over one million print volumes and nearly 950,000 e-resources. Job Function:

Coordinate the enhancement/maintenance of bibliographic, authority, holdings, and item records in the University Libraries' library management system to facilitate user discovery and access to scholarly resources that support research, teaching and learning; supervise personnel assigned to the section; provide original and complex copy cataloging according to established library standards and practices; create authority records; support an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic direction of the University Libraries.

Minimum Education:

MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program.

Preferred Education:

Additional advanced degrees.

Minimum Experience:

One or more years of cataloging and/or authority/bibliographic control experience using MARC formats, AACR2rev or RDA, Library Congress subject headings and classification, a bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion, and a library management system, such as Alma.

Preferred Experience:

Supervisory experience; professional cataloging experience and/or authority/bibliographic control experience in an academic library; music and/or multimedia cataloging experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate database enrichment and maintenance activities for bibliographic, authority, holdings, and item records; monitor emerging standards to ensure the accuracy and completeness of all records.
  • Assign and review work, orient and train staff, and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel.
  • Catalog educational and informational resources in multimedia and print formats using international cataloging codes, metadata formats for bibliographic description, LC-PCC Policy Statements, controlled vocabularies for assigning subjects, and LC or other classification systems as specified by local practice.
  • Create/update authority records for the Libraries' online authority file; perform database maintenance or enrichment functions as required.
  • Participate in the development, documentation, and evaluation of unit policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Actively participate in and positively contribute to the activities of the Libraries, university, and profession through such opportunities as related professional organizations, presentations, committee service, publication, etc.; keep abreast of professional literature and scholarly developments in areas of specialization and pursue opportunities for relevant professional development.
  • Participate in metadata creation for specified digital collections and projects.
