Senior Research Associate, Global Health Science and Security – Georgetown University
Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security (CGHSS) conducts original research to help decision makers worldwide build sustainable capacities to prevent, detect, respond to public health emergencies, and to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with a high-quality evidence base to make decisions that promote health security.
Job Overview
The Senior Research Associate provides technical and analytical support to the planning, development, and implementation of sponsored research projects, simulation exercises, and global health security activities associated with the Center for Global Health Science and Security. They play an integral role in the development, design, and application of tools, workshops, and stakeholder engagements to identify gaps in national and capabilities for global health security as it relates to the International Health Regulations and Joint External Evaluation.
Senior Research Associates draft analytical reports to characterize gaps and opportunities for capacity building through international partnerships; support the development and testing of case studies and other original training and educational materials; and assist in the planning and implementation of simulation exercises and workshops to test national, regional, and global capabilities to respond to biological events.
They also provide input to the design of research methodologies, tools and data analysis; work collaboratively within a larger team context; and provide expertise and critical analysis to fellow research staff, superiors, and student RAs.
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to Dr. Erin Sorrell, Assistant Professor, and secondarily to other principal investigators by project, the Senior Research Associate works collaboratively with other Center faculty, research staff, and administrative staff.
As well, they collaborate among multi-disciplinary team members based in multiple partner institutions, and uphold the Center, Elizabeth R Griffin, and Georgetown missions through these interactions.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in the biological sciences or related field
3 to 5 years of work experience in a relevant field or 1-3 years applied research experience
Capability of analyzing global health security policies, conducting research on infectious diseases threats, conducting data analysis, and preparing reports and papers with moderate supervision, adapting complex research methodologies as needed
Flexible and capable of responding to rapidly evolving needs for the planning, development, and implementation of research projects and training events as a valued member of a multi-disciplinary team
Knowledge of current concepts in global health security, data management, biological threat agents and implementation science policies and practices
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a team
Ability to prioritize, focus and achieve results in a fast paced and complex environment
Ability to work with colleagues and partners of diverse backgrounds and attention to detail
Advanced organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Availability and willingness to travel internationally
Preferred qualifications
Experience in conducting policy analysis related to health systems, International Health Regulations, infectious diseases, One Health and/or implementation science
Experience in data collection and analysis related to laboratory systems, biosafety/biosecurity and infectious diseases – with a particular focus on One Health
Knowledge of information management systems and platforms
Experience with international travel
Foreign language proficiency (Arabic, French)
