About the Department
The mission of Communication Technologies is to provide premier communication services to the entire NC State University community. The department provides communication services such as data, telephony, cable TV, video, and converged services such as IP Telephony and IP Video to over 34,000 students and approximately 8,000 faculty and staff.

Supporting this continuously growing academic population is a distributed enterprise data network that provides over 75,000 network access ports with connectivity to the Internet and Internet2, 12,000 phone lines, and 4,000 cable television outlets.

Communication Technologies (ComTech) is viewed as the telephony, cable television, and network service provider for the NC State University community and is responsible for designing, maintaining, and supporting the campus voice, video, and data network infrastructures and all associated components.
Essential Job Duties
This Network Specialist will be part of a team that designs, tests, builds, diagnoses, and maintains the NCSU multi-vendor campus network. The campus network utilizes data center, carrier, wireless, and enterprise technologies. Potential candidates should have in-depth proficiencies in multiples of these technologies along with some of the overarching technologies like firewalls, DNS, DHCP, IPAM and automation.

A prospective candidate should be able to currently perform a substantial amount of the following:
Design networks to meet business requirements
Plan stepwise procedures for implementing new technologies within an existing network
Perform in depth troubleshooting of network issues across various technologies
Ability to recognize network issues from packet captures
Implement and troubleshoot L3VPN based networks
Implement and troubleshoot EVPN based networks
Understand advanced vendor hardware documentation as it pertains to the campus network including areas such as:
ASICs
Buffer sizing
Packet paths
Implement and troubleshoot advanced OSPF and BGP protocols configurations:
Route filtering
Multiple area OSPF
BGP with multiple autonomous systems
Implement and troubleshoot advanced firewall configurations:
Dynamic routing protocols
Layer 3 and transparent firewall technologies
Troubleshooting beyond testing policy matches
Automating networks utilizing open source and commercial automation platforms
Perform network capacity planning and forecasting/trending
Perform hardware configuration and installation of network devices according to best practices and procedures
Research new technologies and products including evaluating, performing cost analysis, and writing business justification for purchasing.
Develop and maintain current documentation
Participate in maintenance windows after hours and weekends
Work with campus groups with varying degrees of networking experience to develop requirements, initiate and/or implement technology solutions to meet their needs
Maintain an awareness of and interest in new network technologies
Integrate new technologies and solutions with existing network management tools
Participate in the development of annual project budgets

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Entry level with Masters; Bachelors and 5 yrs experience
Other Required Qualifications
Requires a strong knowledge of a large subset of the following routing and switching concepts such as EVPN, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, IPV6, DOT1x, IPSec, TLS, MPLS, TCP/IP, VLANs, and switch stacking.
Effective communication skills are required for this position in order to work with University staff and students with varying levels of networking knowledge.
Ability to determine the best communication method based on the technical expertise for the person(s) they are working with so that design principles are understood, implemented and problems are resolved in an efficient manner.
As new technologies and solutions are implemented, this position will be responsible for presenting the solutions and support information to the NOC/helpdesk staff.
Analytical skills – An effective senior network engineer needs to be able to display analytical thinking skills and learn complex systems quickly. The engineer must be able to analyze data from packet captures, device statistics, and network flow data to assist in troubleshooting service issues that may be rooted in the application, network design, hardware malfunctions, network based attacks, etc.
