JOB SUMMARY:
WSUM Madison Student Radio is seeking an experienced, innovative, and self-motivated engineer to oversee its technical operations. The Broadcast & IT Engineer is responsible for maintaining WSUM's FM operations and streaming capabilities, managing state-of-the-art studio environments, making equipment repairs, planning future technology upgrades, and helping educate and oversee student-led technical projects. This position plays a crucial role in the station's growth and we are seeking someone who will be adept at maintaining existing infrastructure while embracing new technologies. WSUM aspires to further expand its multimedia capabilities, which include podcast and video production, web and app development, and more. The successful candidate will value effective and efficient problem solving and bring patience and creativity to the job. This individual must be enthusiastic about working with students and proactive in their commitment to WSUM's mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs technical engineering operations for production and delivery for transmission, including information technology (IT), for production, technical recommendations, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment for production, and on-air operations to maintain technical quality and adherence to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.
35% Installs, operates, and maintains studio and remote production equipment including computers, servers, and networks to ensure high quality programming and compliance with FCC regulations
15% Creates and maintains accurate documentation for operating procedures
30% Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves problems. Makes recommendations for technical and security improvements
5% Trains student management and station members in broadcasting best practices and oversees Assistant Technical Director student hourly
5% Serves as a subject matter expert, unit liaison, and main point of contact for staff, leadership, vendors, and UW-Madison Division of Information Technology and Facilities Planning & Management
5% Oversees live band recording on site and live remote broadcasts including evenings and weekends
5% Maintains threat detection and performance monitoring systems, responds promptly to alerts, and provides support of systems and equipment at any time of the day or night

Fields of computer science, information systems, engineering, communications/media, journalism, or equivalent professional experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:

- At least 1 year broadcast engineering experience required, 3 years minimum preferred

- Ability to oversee the operation, design, and maintenance of the technological infrastructure of an FM radio station, including studio equipment, Emergency Alert Systems (EAS), a tower site, high power FM transmission systems, studio transmitter links (STL), digital remote control systems, monitoring systems, and network distribution systems

- Professional or related experience managing IT networks and systems

- High degree of adaptability to new technologies and ability to implement them effectively within an organization which aspires to expand its multimedia capabilities

- Ability to respond to broadcast and technical emergencies outside of regularly scheduled business hours, including those which require travel to WSUM studio and tower locations

- Must possess a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one

- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and carry equipment short distances, and be able to bend, crawl and kneel behind and beneath equipment installations

- Ability to work patiently and diligently with college undergraduate students

- Demonstrated commitment to supporting a diverse workforce through respectful collaboration and open communication

- Experience managing cross functional projects from planning to completion with multiple stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

- Familiarity with AoIP systems, microwave transmission systems, automated programming systems, music scheduling software, and audio and video editing software

- Experience maintaining and repairing audio broadcast equipment and basic understanding of electronic and related equipment

- Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, especially with respect to requirements of the Chief Operator

- Knowledge of FAA rules and regulations, especially with respect to tower compliance

- SBE certification (Broadcast Technologist, Broadcast Engineer AM/FM, and Senior Broadcast Engineer AM/FM) a plus
